Anyone feel like starting a tally of how many picks Seattle has cost themselves now?
Up in the air if you want to include the Ladd deal. But at least:
2022 2nd and a 2022 7th from Philly for Gostisbehere (took Carsen Twarynski with no incentive)
2021 2nd from Columbus (took Morgan Geekie with no incentive)
2024 2nd from Florida (could have signed Driedger in actual FA)
2022 2nd and 2023 2nd from Winnipeg (took Vitek Vanecek from Washington for free)
Crazy that Seattle should have at least 5 extra 2nd round picks, with 1 extra in 2021, 2 extra in 2022, 1 extra in 2023, and 1 extra in 2024, plus an extra 7th (or maybe slightly more) in 2022, and instead they just....did nothing. And that is if you DONT include the extra 2021 2nd, 2022 2nd, and 2023 3rd the Coyotes got for taking Ladd's contract.
Theoretically Seattle should have an extra 7 2nd round picks over the next 5 years and they don't have any. GMs didn't "learn their lesson" from last time, Francis just had a complete inability to leverage his opportunity.
Doesn't include what they could have traded down from no2 and still got a really good player (same tier) as who they took at 2.
I feel like Francis is almost too tunnel visioned on constructing his team and not working phones. Like it is a lot to do making a full team vs staying on the phone with a team trying to get picks. Maybe Francis is stretched thin.
We get that way in fantasy some weeks and try and squeeze something out too much of a player and say "ok well that's my offer" and take a day off to do some actual work and look back and a deal was done where the person took a slightly different deal from someone else.

It doesn’t make sense to me either. I had heard that Francis’ asking price to either pick or stay away from a player was 2 picks. Why he wouldn’t adjust as it became obvious there were no takers is beyond me

I fail to see how taking a bunch of players to flip for draft picks would hurt their draft standing for next season or the year after.
I also fail to see how taking players like Giordano and Larsson and reportedly signing Jaden Schwartz helps towards that goal. Seattle did a great job of already making themselves a perfectly middling team.

There are two ends of the spectrum for binary thinking. What about the gray area of still needing to roster a team in the fall?
You bring in too many players that you trade them for 2nd round picks - you don't have enough players to play for Game 1.
You bring in too many good players that you can't trade and you play yourself out of a chance to get Wright or Bedard.
And your example is weak. Is the 2nd round pick that you receive for Jake Bean going to be a better asset than Morgan Geekie?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Are 5 second round picks better than Morgan Geekie, Vitek Vanecek, and Carsen Twarynski? Yes.
Could Seattle have still fielded a full team without those three players? Weirdly, yes.
Seattle just drafted 30 players lol
They can trade 7 of them and still have a full roster, and that doesn't even include follow-up trades and free agency
Again, binary thinking
