Default Dougie Hamilton allowed to speak to other teams

    From Friedman today on Twitter:

A sign the off-season is really revving up as the final four chase the Stanley Cup: Carolina has given Dougie Hamilton permission to talk to other NHL teams. Opens potential for a sign-and-trade.

The other thing this does: allows Hamilton to see if the Hurricanes do make the best offer for him…potentially allowing for a return if he doesn’t like what he sees out there. Very interesting manoeuvre by team and player

Ya it opens up the opportunity for Hamilton to get 8 yrs if he signs and gets traded and gives the Canes the opportunity to not lose him for nothing.

Huh, Bruins could use a top offensive defenseman since Krug left...

Many teams can use him, that's for sure, but with a flat cap for the foreseeable future, im not sure how many can afford him.

indeed, actually affording him is definitely an issue. im not sure theres a better situation than the one he has in carolina so if it means taking only 8m to stay he should strongly consider it.

Who knows what carolina is actually offering though

It allows Carolina to go "see, no one is gonna offer you what we're offering you".

Also, I dunno the Canes expansion plans, but if they so choose to, maybe they can somehow swing something where they keep Hamilton then trade him to a team to get even more value. I don't know the likelihood of this, but it's something I'm sure they've discussed internally.

The most valuable part of this is definitely trying to get Hamilton at a slightly better deal. Some players take this type of treatment personally though so it could backfire. We've seen players leave money on the table if they didnt feel respected. Slavin publicly calling for them to keep Hamilton really should factor in though.....

As mentioned in the Carolina Hurricanes thread, i disagree with your second point lol. Too much headache for too little reward.

Ya the 2nd part is a streeettch. But like I said I'm sure it has been brought up, but I don't think it would really happen.

I could see PHI in the mix here, but I think it would have to be a three team trade - because I don't see PHI not protecting Provorov/Sanheim/Myers.
New(er) GMs love reshaping their teams.

I could see Philly doing this:

To PHI: Hamilton, on 8yr deal.
To CAR: PHI Draft Pick of Some Value and/or... possible low-cap$ prospect (Patrick or Frost)
To Team3: BigContractToEat (Voracek or JVR) + Sanheim or Myers (one of PHI's three protect D) + PHI Draft Pick of Some Value

[CBJ & DET both fit pretty well in the "Team3" slot...]

If theres a sign and trade it probably happens in the period between the expansion and prospect drafts, that way a team can protect their players, maybe gain cap spaced to the Kraken, and offer up their 1st in part of the package.

Only real risk there is Seattle negotiating a better deal with him during the negotiating window and selecting him outright.
