Who do I pick 4th overall in my inaugural dynasty draft?

32 teams. Cap league. Dynasty. 1 point for G/A/W/SO, 0.1 for Hit/Blk/SOG, 0.05 for saves.

This seems like a slam dunk pick but I'd be curious to hear what the forum thinks.

McDavid, Mack and Draisaitl will be gone by #4 which leaves me to choose from Matthews, Vasilevskiy, Marchand or, a darkhorse imo since he was injured all year...Kurcherov.

Keep in mind this is a salary cap league. Do I take Matthews and run? Do I take Marchand at almost half the price and save cap space? Do I take the guy who's beasting it up in the playoffs and had 128 points two years ago? Too early to draft a 9.5 million dollar goalie?

What say you?

Hmmm........what is the cap and what is the roster breakdown? These would slightly affect my decision and the $$$ per roster slot.

The way I look at it, this factors in a lot. Drafting a lesser cap player such as Marchand would leave you more cap space in the middle and end of the draft for better players.

Another name to throw in the mix would be Pastrnak.

Without knowing more details, I would probably go:

Kucherov
Pastrnak
Matthews
Marchand

I knew I was forgetting someone... Pastrnak is a good call. I will strongly consider him. League is 12F/6D/2G with 3 reserves and lots of minors. 81.5M cap.

Being 32tm and 2G starts per day makes it interesting as well. If there is a goalie run or two, it is slim pickings your second time around.

I would probably take Pastrnak or Kucherov personally at the 4th pick. Unless one of the "Big 3" you listed falls for some reason.

Either Matthews or Kucherov for me. I know they make a lot but both guys do very well in the regular season. Matthews seems on the brink of breaking 50 goals and 100 points. Marchand and Pasta are great financially but in the near future Marchand/Bergeron will be close to retirement and Pasta will have nobody to help him. Matthews will always have talent around him as will Kuch. (In the near future). So I’d go AM or Kuch. Good luck.

I kind of like Kucherov here. Guys like Pasta and Marchand are cheaper but I don't think they have the consistent (longer term) 100+ pt capability that Kucherov has. You also save 2 Mil or so that the big three and Matthews would cost you. Kuch is kind of the middle ground CAP wise but should bring extremely high end production.

Agreed. In the end I'm leaning Kuch. Cheapest, most consistent 100 + point player outside of Mack and Drai.

Kucherov for me. To me, he is part of the "big 4", the dropoff is after him.

Then I would go Matthews and Pasta.

with the low cap like this i think 1M is a lot ....i would also pick Kucherov here...if Cap was higher Matthews would be my pick as i believe he will be most productive from the bunch for a while.

I'm not even sure Matthews is the best Leaf to own so there's no way I'm taking him at 4.

Matthews for me. (And I recognize that his $11.6m is well above Kucherov's $9.5m)

Kucherov is turning 28 in a few days.
Matthews turns 24 in September.
That 4 years difference becomes a major thing once Kucherov turns 30, which will happen just two years from this league starting.
In leagues with keen GMs... it can be a serious, real grind to churn an asset if he's over the age of 30.

A lot of larger-framed hockey players don't do well as they age.
Ovechkin is the outlier... I'm surprised how well his body and production held up.

At the start of the Fantasy draft you have got to take a "Younger" superstar. As Pengwin stated, getting assets for a player into his 30's is difficult to do making Marchand a hard this early. I started a fantasy team 2 years ago and took Pasta at 5 and got Marchand on the turnaround in our 12 team league. Most GM's will let older players slide down the list. I would probably be inclined to take Matthews here.
