Default BASELESS SPECULATION FOR FUN: Eichel to NYR

With the Davidson and Gorton news, and reporting that it is because the rebuild is taking too long, what is a trade that actually makes sense?

IMO, Buffalo can actually afford to do this. With Cozens looking like a real future 1C, and Mittlestadt actually starting to look like he could be a 2C, nobody wants to give up on Eichel but they may have the long term center depth to come out ok. So lets pretend like they do, what is the trade? Ultimately, they need G so I think Georgiev is part of it. The question is what's enough?

Georgiev, Nils Lundkvist, Lafreniere? Do the Rangers think that's too much? Does Buffalo think it's not enough?

I think ultimately, if it happens, the package is going to be something like

    Georgiev,
    One of Lundkvist, Miller, Schneider
    One of Lafreniere, Kakko, Kravstov

    Something like that. Thoughts?

I personally hope that Eichel is not traded into the Metro.

But I see where you are coming from.

If I am Buffalo and know that Eichel wants out I would definitely accept this offer:

    Georgiev, Lafreniere and Miller.

But NYR I think would value Lafreniere too high to move him in an offer like this.

i dont think its Kravtsov or Schneider....but i can see any combination of other 4 and maybe 1st rounder on top?

but once again, i personally think Eichel stays in Buffalo

Conceptually I agree with the package, but like PH I don’t think the Rangers would move Lafreniere. So that leaves Kakko as the Sabres shouldn’t accept Kravtsov as part of that package (doesn’t mean they won’t, though). If it’s Kakko then I think they have to hold out for Lundkvist.

Obviously Sabres need to tread very carefully, as quality for quantity deals tend to work better for the team receiving quality. I can only think of the Lindros deal as of comparable stature where the quantity team won out.

The unanswered question is if Buffalo would be willing to trade Eichel in division, but based on their team ages and timelines I think it would actually be smart to do so, depending on the return. Eichel obviously isn't "old" but he is already starting to get to the point of outside Buffalo's projected window. If they could get Laf and Miller, then add like Owen Power this year, you then have a long term top 6 of

    Laf-Cozens-Quinn
    Peterka-Mittlestadt-Reinhart

    Dahlin-Power
    Miller-Samuelsson/Jokiharju/Laaksonen

    Georgiev/UPL/Portillo

Which seems like it might be a better setup than not getting 3 or 4 premium assets for Eichel.

    Panarin for Eichel, straight up.
Both guys are $10m+, 5 years left.

I actually think they have relatively even-value.
Panarin is better overall NHL player, IMO... though pricier.
But Eichel is younger and may have more electric ceiling.

Ziba and Strome are both UFA in summer 2022.
And NYR needs to lock up a dynamic center with the uncertainty on those two.

(Politically - let's have fun with assuming the owner, Dolan, is a massive right-winger that wants Panarin gone for the team to be *cough* less Blue, more Red *cough* I know... wrong thread... where's that TonyD thread...)

They are in different divisions..im assuming divisions are going back to normal based on what NHL has said so far.

It won't be within the division if the NHL sticks to to plans to return to the divisions of 2019-20.

In this scenario, why does a last place overall team want to trade a cheaper 25 year old center for a 30 year old more expensive winger?

I can see the logic from a NYR side, but other than “they’re dumb” I don’t see the explanation from the Buffalo side.

Answer: The teams that Artemi Panarin plays on... wins games.
I think you put Panarin winging with Cozens and/or Mittelstadt and you instantly have a dynamic line.

If there is a BUFF/NYR trade... I would think Eichel for Lafrenierre + Kakko would move the needle for both sides.

    Interesting thread.

How about going in a slightly different direction?

BUF needs a G - now and for the future. So why not:

    Eichel for
Shesterkin, Kakko, and a 2-4th round pick?

Ullmark and Shesterkin can be a 1A/B for next season while Shesterkin continues his development. He would be their future 1A in a couple of years.

I dont think Ullmark is in Buffalo next season. I also dont think NYR would trade Shesterkin. Georgiev maybe.
