Because it wasn't a purposeful pass and the Sabres player poked it to Smith is likely why it's not an assist.

That goal kinda fluked itself into existence.

Choosing money over fit/success often doesnt work out. If youre not happy with your situation, youre not going to play your best.

It's not like he had 8x8 offered, it was only for 1 year in a short-season with large escrow. i dont think this cost him his big payday as any good team likely wont have cap space for him anyway.

NHL listed Colin Miller with a giveaway at 14;33 left in the 2nd, and Smith scored unassisted at 14;31 left. Which I get why it's listed as a giveaway, but man that's a weak giveaway stat since I don't see him having possession.

In turn I def think Hall should have gotten an assist just because I don't think a poke check where you are gliding backwards should be considered having possession lol.

For reference, this is the Miller goal/Cozens assist which is different but very similar

If that's considered possession and a giveaway for Miller, then there must be 120 giveaways per game. The puck deflected off his stick and he never controlled the puck at all. Based on this interpretation of the rule, rebound goals should now be unassisted goals since the goalie has just as much puck possession when making a save than Miller had on this play.

The worst part is that the only person who cares about this is Taylor Hall!!!

I think the NHL got it right. Smith's goal is unassisted because the Buffalo defender played the puck with his stick. That's also a give away.

Cozens and Bjork get at assets because a puck deflecting off a stake is not playing or controlling the puck.

Rebounds also have never been considered playing or controlling the puck.

There’s likely a few fantasy owners who care too

Fantastic to see him score a proper goal too. Not just a puck going in off the pants or something. Good to get that out of the way early and get some confidence back.

I honestly hope he does. I'll be surprised if he does, but I would be happy to see it.

I also wont be surprised to see him re-sign for less money to stay in Boston after this season. Something he should have done to begin with. Not necessarily Boston per se, but signed for less money on a good team where he didn't need to be the focus every night. Someplace he could come in, do what he does best which is drive the play and generate offense on a good team.
