Are you sure? I read that this move is only for the playoffs and his LTIR status does not give them more cap space this season. If this were true, why wouldn't teams do this every season?

Leafs were the first team to ever be a middle man to retain salary last yr, now it's happening. Teams just aren't creative sometimes.

I will be the first to say I don't think many people can grasp what the Leafs do with their cap, but I do think this all is around Andersen's injury and his LTIR status. There was something with the order of Riley Nash and Andersen's LTIR status with the Leafs. Technically Andersen went on LTIR prior to Nash's move from IR to LTIR. So I think they pushed their cap as close as possible to the $81.5mill before LTIR-ing Nash.

If Nash went on LTIR before Andersen, they wouldn't have received as much LTIR relief as the other way around (as I've gathered in the past). If Andersen went on LTIR without Nash acquisition, then the Leafs would have received 0 LTIR relief (which is why he wasn't moved to LTIR before Nash was acquired).

Again, the Leafs with the cap are playing 5D chess while teams play checkers and we are still trying to learn to talk. So I'm still not ever gonna say "I'm right, you're wrong" with this lol.

    He better wear 71.

Only his dad and Clarkson have worn 71 for the Leafs.

Someone grab the soap. I need to wash a name out of his mouth, a name that should never be spoken of as far as Leaf Fans are concerned. It never happened! 71 is FULL Foligno!

Foligno vs. Kerfoot vs. Engvall as 3rd line Centre? This is a no-brainer.

Foligno is a heart ans soul type player. To the earlier comment about Spezza/Simmonds/Thornton - yes brought in for vet-leadership - check x3.
But none of them bring the entangibles Foligno does.
He's a Claude Lemieux mentality type player. Anything/everything to help the team win.

For the playoffs, I take Foligno 10/10 times over Hall. The CBJ haven't made deep runs the last couple years but they have had massive upsets in both seasons - Leafs & the juggernaut Lightning in 19/20.
(Foligno was the captain of both teams in case you missed it).

The only players on the Leafs that really mash players are Muzzin, Bogo & Simmonds. Hyman plays a really gritty style, but he is not a big hitter.

Down by a goal, up by a goal, Foligno didn't even have to wait for Tortz to say his name before hopping on the ice. He can chew up minutes - top 3 in Forward ice-time for the CBJ the past few seasons. One of the few players that had full confidence from Tortz in all situations.

He also provides the potential of a real front of net presence on the power play - for both units.

He gives this line-up a real edge it was lacking heading toward the playoffs.

100% love this deal. This was my preferred acquisition at the deadline.

    ---
Riley Nash - There is a good chance he's ready to play at some point in the first round. he's a PK/shutdown Centre.
The LTIR piece with Nash is by placing him on LTIR his salary doesn't affect the Leafs cap and by being a max-cap team they get to utilize LTIR cap relieve. Essentially from a salary cap perspective Nash is free.
If he can come back and get into the playoffs he gives the Leafs PK a big boost. he can also play a shutdown role against teams top two lines.

Bottom six Centre's were a real weakness for the Leafs. They fixed this in spades.

Nash was taking no one out of the line up unless there were injuries or they didn’t believe in Engval.
I've read that they don't want another option for Engval in the playoffs, especially someone that can win more faceoffs.

I like this move. I think Foligno makes a good addition for a strong playoff push. He brings positional flexibility, grit, experience, leadership, and he can slot anywhere in the line up either bottom 6 or top 6 and still make a difference. Got him Pretty cheap too imo.

A 1st and a 4th is what they paid to get him. Not sure I'd call that cheap for a rental, but it depends on your definition of cheap I guess.

In dollars, he's cheap and they didn't need to give up a roster spot? Maybe it was that definition of cheap. Not cheap in terms of what was moved, but not an overpayment when multiple teams were ok with moving a 1st.
