It's actually a really nice deal for the Canucks.

I just think it's the wrong one. he was a UFA. they should have traded him based on their current standings.

One of Bennings biggest faults is holding onto and putting such emphasis on this type of player.

Makes me wonder if re-signing Sutter is next.

All these positive tests gives him a blanket excuse that's a few levels better than the annual line of 'no one would trade a draft pick'
he's the worst deadline GM in the league.
I'm not sure another GM has failed so often at trading away pending UFA's for future assets.

This would be a fine deal for Van if $3.25 was the total contract value rather than the AAV.

I would have let him go to UFA at that price. When he doesn't get this deal from another team try to re-sign him for cheaper. And if someone else gives him this deal then... sucks to be them!

Big time. Benning back to overpaying for the bottom half of the roster.

Jim would love to resign his boy Sutter, cornerstone player . They will need a centre in the bottom 6 so im pretty sure you will be right.

Sadly, they also needed to sign Pearson because who would they replace him with? Podkolzin isnt walking onto a top 6 role. And its not terrible money or term, the trade protection sucks the most imo. Iys also not the signing Id be focused on, but we dont call the shots.

And for the record, Im not defending Jim. He screwed the season (and maybe a couple more) out if the gate. They signed JV over TT and now there is talk about a JV buyout. Im ok with letting Markstrom and Tanev go but the coach should have been signed in the same breath. Having TT over JV to start the year would have sent a clear message to the team and fans that theyre committed to progress and success rather than a “be patient for another year or two” message. In two years theyll again be in cap hell.

I disagree they needed to sign Pearson. I'm quite confident they could have found a number of options to put up 11 points in 33 games playing exclusively in a 2nd line role for cheaper, or they could have found a better producing player for the same amount of money.

If it were that easy Bo Ho would have better wingers to play with long ago. Ill go check cap friendly for top 6 players under 3.5 M. Wish me luck.

At 3.25 per year I expect about 30-35 points a year and a positive +/- Thats about it.

A top 6 player getting 30-35 points is a liability

Just because the team has been grossly mismanaged doesn’t mean it’s hard.

    I’d recommend starting here: https://www.capfriendly.com/browse/a...phit-0-3500000

Many of these players were available for free last offseason, many similar players will be available for free next offseason, many of these players were available for relatively cheap trade, and some of these players just require marginally passable drafting.

But no. Vancouver definitely did not ~have~ to sign Tanner Pearson to this terrible contract lmao.

On the bright side for fantasy GMs, he took a pay cut LOL!

How often do you see that from top six forwards?

This is not a team that's built to look for the "missing piece". So this is a moot signing that puts stress on re-signing Pettersson, Boeser and Hughes to me. If it's not a Stanley Cup pushing team signing a periph guy for a "now" win, all these signings do is put stress and pressure on signing your future.

    Just as an example...

    Corey Perry - 30gp, 9G, 7A for $46,875 per pt.
    Tanner Pearson - 33gp, 6G, 5A for $340,909 per pt.

Habs pulled Perry off the trash heap this year and he's skating top 6 mins and doing well. These sorts of players are available every year at bargain prices. This is just a terrible GM being terrible. Awful contract.
