That's right - no Vegas. Yeah, on the cap...

those with an aggregate Expansion Draft value that is between 60-100 percent of the prior season's upper limit for the salary cap.

Here's the team I picked for the Kraken using the capfriendly expansion draft simulator tool:

    Khudobin
    Allen

    Hill, Gustavsson

    Dillon Subban
    Graves Dumba
    Dunn Holl

    Zadorov, Clifton, Bean, Caleb Jones

    McCann Mittelstadt Tyler Johnson
    Milano Backlund Kunin
    Clutterbuck Lizotte Acciari
    MacEwan Howden Aube-Kubel

    Nice- alot of similar picks!

I think Jake Bean has the potential to be Theodore light.

Im not sure they let Dumba get away from them.

im really curious what Colorado does to protect their lague best D-core and also curious what seattle poaches form Calgary- I think any one of Bennett, Dube, or Backlund could easily add 10-15 points in a better scoring role...

I've been tweaking my protection lists as things change, and will probably go through everything by the end of the month. Planning on writing up some analysis, as I love expansion drafts.

What do guys think Minnesota are going to do? The have 5 NMC requiring protection 3 of which are D, Dumba being the odd D out if they protect 7-3. Do they trade Dumba before the draft? Dobber guessed Talbot being taken which makes sense, he and Khudobin have similar contracts and it may be prudent for Francis to take them if even just to trade them for other assests. But I also thought Vegas may do something like that. I could see Kahkonen being exposed as well, I'm not sure.

One thought I had was Guerin sending Menell's rights plus another piece to Seattle to get them to take Rask's last year. Thoughts?

I still think we will see Hyman on Seattle despite no one else agreeing :P

I wonder if the Canucks now expose Virtanen now that he is toxic?
Be sweet if the Kraken selected Holtby. Likely need a sweetner.
Not much to chose from on the Canucks - Canucks need to shed salary.

If they expose him it just guarantees they’ll pick someone else. That could be a strategy.

I read that seattle has a window in which they can talk to ufa's and if they can come to an agreement said player becomes seattles choice .

i.e - if they can come to an agreement with Cizikas he becomes the selection off nyi

Vegas had the same opportunity and took Deryk Engelland from Calgary that way. If a team protects a pending UFA though Seattle doesn't get that negotiation window with him.

The Sabres’ Jeff Skinner has agreed to waive his no-movement clause for the expansion draft, his agent tells @TheAthleticBUF.

Skinner is probably the most untradeable player in the NHL.
    Nobody wants that contract.

    You can't have a 30pt winger making $9m... in a lockerroom.
If he's worth $9m... then what's everybody else worth?
Part of what makes/made TB work is that once you get a couple guys signed up on great salaries... then it's a very "team" thing for other players to fall inline accordingly on their numbers.
You know that comes up in negotiations "Well... our captain is getting $xxxx... we'll offer around $xxxx... but we really can't pay more than our captain".

Buffalo needs to buy him out... especially now while they can eat that salary cap hit in 2022-2023 given all their youth.

Seems like a smart play for Seattle might be to do with goalies what Vegas did with D men. A quick look tells me this is a list of NHL quality back up, prospect, and starting goalies that will be available for signing/selection...

Stolarz, Hill, Raanta, Vladar, Halak, Mrazek, Sybban, Grubauer, Khudobin, Stalock, Driedger, Quick, Talbot, Allen, Ingram, Hogberg, Gustavsson, Foreberg, Eliiot, DeSmoth, Husso/Binnington, Andersen, Holtby, Samsonov/Vancek, Brossoit.

Grab 5 or 6 and make some trades with this capital.

Problem with goalies is that the market in the NHL is a lot slower than with defencemen, and there are a lot fewer teams that need G than D, so loading up on D is still the smarter option.
