    A half shift financial penalty.

Best part is that this shows everyone is a homer deep down.

Based on the standard the NHL has set this was obviously not going to be a suspension, and shouldn't have been based on that standard.

Based on the standards that ~should~ be in place, this ~should~ have been at least 2 games.

I don’t think it looked that bad. He was clearly frustrated and it was intentional which is the worst thing about it. The $5k fine is a joke, but it's a joke to anybody who receives an NHL salary.

For anybody who says there is 2 sets of rules in situations like this saying that Tom Wilson would be suspended, well,ya... no kidding. Wilson has a bit of a history with this kind of thing. That shouldn’t be taken into consideration?

    - that's then $6,831 per minute
    - So the $5k fine equates to 43.9 seconds worth of playing time!

if we reduce it to the 56 game schedule this year too, he makes $10,002 per minute - so the fine is worth about roughly 30 seconds of his time!
I wonder how long it would be if you included money he gets from commercials and what not into it.

How long have they been dishing out these "fines" for minor penalties?
I don't really get these coffee change fines.

This is all there is to it really.

And McDavid has a suspension history. He’s no Wilson, but this isn’t the first time he’s put another players health at risk. And it’s not like it was a hit gone bad like you could make the case for with Myers or Dube (both of which should have been suspended). It was pure head hunting.

I believe my position on the DOPS is clear. They are complete and utter bull shit.

Is this supposed to be a shot at Crosby? Go find a clip of Crosby doing anything remotely as greasy as this and we can talk about how he acted after getting a penalty.

Props to you for crunching the numbers, but it's not really a fair way to break down his earnings. He might only play 22 minutes a game but he works a hell of a lot more than that so it's not really a meaningful way to measure anything. You wouldn't break down any other profession that way.

Great point. Being an elite professional athlete is practically a 24/7 job these days. Not many John Daly's left in pro sports (regrettably).

But hey, Chandler Stephenson got three games for the same shit not two days later. The DOPS - I just don’t have the words anymore for how crap this group is.

    Agreed.

Someone like Tom Wilson with his history doesn’t even need to be brought into this conversation to claim that a fine makes no sense here, just swap McDavid and Kotkaniemi on this play and KK would be sitting for 2.

Maybe Chandler Stephenson saw this hit and assumed there was a new standard only to quickly be informed that he isn’t special.

And that is exactly how the DOPS is actively making the game less safe.

I agree that this decision is an absolute joke and it should have easily been a suspension, but I don't see how you can make a connection that the DOPS is somehow making the game less safe.
