As stipulated in the release, the Sabres retain $1.625 million of Staal's cap hit in the trade

So Jake Evans is out of the mix for now. This could be bad for the other centers if Staal produces. Not sure how much he has left in the tank though.
It makes sense to add depth considering they have so many games left to play.

It's good move for the Canadiens as they get an NHL player for nothing but I'm not sure if adding another 2nd or 3rd line forward is what the Habs need right now.

happy with the deal will give a little break to habs young center and may help in the long run since habs have many game left

They didn’t put Chairot on LTIR. With Staal making whatever % of $1.65 mil he’s owed I believe they are ok. CapFriendly says they are.
