His head did not hit the ice. It was a glancing blow to the chin - very similar to but a lot less violent than a number of these we've seen this year. I would be very surprised if he missed any time at all.

Hard to see what else Blitchfield could have done - he kind of moved so that he wouldn't make contact from behind and seemed to legitimately target Mac's shoulder. Mac was hunched over, focused on the puck, and didn't see Blitchfield coming so he was unable to prepare himself for the hit. Contact was made with the head so it's a match penalty. I can't see a suspension or fine on this though.

I feel for Blitchfield here. He wants to earn his spot, which he does by being physical and separating a player from the puck before he gets moving. No way does Blitchfield defend MacKinnon after 3 strides. However, attempting a hit when you're sided-by-side with the player, it's a risk you take.
It's like when you see a hit from behind into the boards when a player last second turns to expose his back to protect the puck prior to a hit. Calculated risk that hitter is taking when he starts the hitting process.
100% wasn't intentional. I can't see what Blitch could have done mid hit to not hit MacKinnon in the head, but he could have just not engaged in a hit. I can see a fine, I can see a suspension ebcause it was MacKinnon.

It's quite a lot of bull shit really. Myers didn't get suspended for his very similar and much more damaging hit on Armia because...well...he's tall? I guess? These hits are exactly the same - it's just a smidge different on where the initial point of contact is. Again the NHL looks like a straight clown show for the way the rule is written and the way it is enforced. Standard ops.

That's what they say they want but then they don't suspend hits like Myers or Dube's on KK - all based on shades of distinction. There is absolutely zero clear messaging on this. If they were to treat it with the same fervor as getting rid of the racist and sexist crap it'd be dealt with. But it isn't.

It's an illegal hit but a suspension for that is really weak in my opinion. No chance he gets suspended if the recipient was a random bottom-sixer if you ask me.
Like others have said I think the NHL is pretty laughable in how they handle these things - both on the ice in real-time, and in the offices to discuss it - so can't say I'm surprised at all.
