Default Greatest GOAT of all sports

Ranking of the GOATS in each sport.

Not hard to tell this is written by an NFL writer having Brady at the top...

But lets open the debate up here... Should Brady be #1 on this list?

Jordan would say I'm 6-0. I never lost a finals.
Had I never left basketball it would have been 8-0, maybe 9-0.
Then we look at league MVP awards. Jordan was the best individual player more years than not.
Jordan 5 MVP, 10 scoring titles.

honestly head to head. I don't think it's close.

My questioning would be: In a 60 minute football game, how often was Brady on the field for all 60 minutes? 55 minutes? 50 minutes? 45? 40? And how much of his time on the field was playing impactful defense?

You can't easily be the goat if you're only on the field for half the time. You'd have to be so unbelievably better than everyone else that it would make up for only playing half the game. Like how a designated hitter would need to be so much better a hitter than guys who also played the field in order to be an MVP. Brady doesn't meet that criterion. Modern basketball players are in the best position to be considered a goat because they play offense and defense and play close to the entire game. That means more than playing half a game.

Any Brady argument rests primarily on the number of times the team he was on won a championship. To give that substantial weight, I'll need it first proven that Chris Jent was a better basketball player than Charles Barkley and that Scott Brosius was a better player than Ted Williams.

This was my argument to friends before this last SB win. It's hard to argue against Brady because the numbers and titles are there like no other in sports. This latest one just adds to his legacy.

Now I know luck plays a huge factor in sports and the best players just seem to come out on top. And it's hard to say Tom Brady has been lucky when he keeps doing it into his mid 40s. But here are the reasons I don't have him as the greatest Goat.

    1. AFC East was terrible. Absolutely horrible for 20 years. Before this year Brady hadn't made a Super Bowl without a bye. But the byes were automatic because they had zero divisional competition for 90% of his seasons there.

    2. Scandals. Deflategate. Spygate. Who knows what else. It deters me from calling him the greatest GOAT.

    3. The Games. Now this can be broken down into a few years but how many times did Brady's SB opponent absolutely crap the bed against them?

    A. The Seattle pass. That game is over with a few Lynch runs
    B. The Atlanta collapse. Who blows a 27-3 lead in the Super Bowl?
    C. The Rams collapse. This SB win reminded me of Peyton's second. Brady didn't do anything to win.

Extra. Mahomes playing with turf toe and a beaten OLine.

And let's not forget The Tuck call in his original win. The call that started it all.

Jordan. Gretzky. Tiger. They don't have these blemishes on their success.

Was also going to say Tiger Woods... So I will add:

    Muhammad Ali
Don't even need to be a boxing fan to have heard of him and quote him.
If you don't pay attention to sports your not going to know about Tom Deflategate Brady.

Second thought, we might have too narrow a focus.

Serena Williams most titles in modern open era
Roger Federer 20 grand slam wins - 101 titles (67 in straight sets, 57 vs top 10 opponents)

Matt Fraser - Cross Fit - 4 world titles, 3 in a row. His wins weren't even close.

cross-fit is all of those things.

No other place will you find someone have to run 3 miles then do chin ups, then do snatches, followed by fireman carries.

That could be one event of 10 over 3 days.

    hell yeah it's a sport.

There's a couple documentaries on netflix/youtube - Redemption is one. Well worth a watch.

Bolt and Serena Williams are two that I was expecting to have to add so I'm glad they were already mentioned, and Michael Phelps should all be in the discussion too. It's tough to compare team sports to each other though, let alone to individual events which is why the debate is so great.

One other name I saw mentioned once in these debates is Terry Fox. A marathon every day for months on one leg. No one's legacy is touching that, no matter how many titles you win.

For the record I'll take Jordan over Brady.

The only correct answer to this question (for men) is Eddie Feigner.

If you don't know the name, google it and spend a few hours being amazed on Youtube.

"On February 18, 1967, Feigner appeared in a celebrity charity softball game against many Major League Baseball players. In the game Feigner struck out Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Brooks Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Maury Wills, and Harmon Killebrew all in a row."

might have an argument for greatest individual athletic performance... but 5 strike-outs in a row, a GOAT it does not make.

I would look at each sports supposed GOAT and see how close the next guy is to them. The one with the most separation might be the GOAT of all GOATs.
