I would make this move.

While Hart > Shest is a fair debate, and I'd be fine with someone wanting Hart as their 1G moving forward, I think the reason you're asking is because you're trying to optimize your league format options... and I personally think you're right to.

Going in to next season with Mack/Kuch/Svech/Carlson/Makar + Kaprizov/Shest I'm guessing would give you the best "set of 7 keepers" in your league. That's the advantage you want to try to have every year.

Compare that to Mack/Kuch/Svech/Hart/and one of JC or Makar + Kaprizov/another rookie... I like what you're trying to do with this trade.

Add on a pick upgrade and I think you're setting yourself in the pole position for next year, which won't be (hopefully) as unpredictable as this current one is.

Only way I don't do this deal is if you think it will cost you a chance at winning this year. If you still think you're fine (with Binn/Black), I'm pulling the trigger.

agree with this, I like Hart a lot but long term they should both be good and this sets you up nice for next year

Long term, I prefer Shesterkin. But it could go either way. Given your league structure (and the ability to keep both D for another year), I think the trade makes sense. Maybe see if you can improve the pick by a round?

For me, Hart > Shesterkin, and not close.

PHI is set-up to be a great defensive team.
Hart only started flailing with the loss of Couturier (a VERY important defensive unit) and Myers.
PHI is a much better team than NYR. Period.

Also - we're seeing Shest not performing well as the "annointed #1".
There's actual pressure once a goalie is THE MAN.
Last year, Shesterkin (& Georgiev) were still not the man. Lundqvist (stats aside) was the man while he was there.

Now the spotlight is on Igor and he is expect to be a savior on a team with all the pieces.
But it's a young team...
And they are going to need to give big money to Zibanajed and Strome in two years.
They have a LOT tied up in Panarin and Trouba (prob too much in Trouba).

And Kakko & Lafreniere are going to want money.
Defensively, they aren't a great team and people are jumping on Shesty's rookie season like it's this very.true.tell about him.
You know who else had a rookie season like Shesterkin... Steve Mason.
We all know how that went.

Hart & the PHI defense is the real deal when healthy.
They had one of the better shots against rates last year.
NYR... not so much.

And this isn't/shouldn't be about the rookie keeper.
Just add a guy like Zegras or Byram or Seider.... that's a fine rookie slot keeper.
Probably one of those guys might be available.

Good support pieces for Hart Peng... but imo, it's not really about a rookie slot, it's also (potentially) losing one of Makar/Carlson.

It's also not really about Hart vs Shest either imo - it's actually about Hart vs. Makar (or Carlson) and a small upgrade on picks. Rookie slot to hold Shesty is just a bonus.

Or more accurately, it's about keeper a G over a 2nd D in this format. For me, I'm keeping 2 elite D over 1 elite G every time in this format, league size and with these categories.

Moreover, it's a 10-team league (with a max 1G keep of 5 keepers). I'd need to be over the moon with a G to keep one in this setup. (and for the record, Hart is one of the few G I'd seriously consider keeping)

If you love your elite G piece... then Hart is an ideal guy to own. If you want to maximize the system annually, not keeping a G is my personal preference.

If you trade Carlson and keep Hart can you then keep Makar and whoever you get in a trade?

Yes & no.
There's several parts... and a big one is THIS season.
I assume the guy isn't punting this season... and this is the most important part... he should be in the hunt with his players.
The other guy (likely) is trying to move Shesterkin because it doesn't help him compete this season - and he's probably trying to sell the OP on Shesterkin's rookie status.

So if he downgrades from Hart-to-Shesty... his team is worse THIS year.
Then next year, yes... his team is stronger... as he gets to keep Makar/Carlson/Shesty vs. Makar/Hart

If the guy is punting this year... I agree with making the move.
That's not stated in the OP... so I'm not assuming hit.

And that's a decision he can make in the off-season...

Yep agree there. In fact ended my original post with the caveat... "unless it will cost you a chance at winning this year".

It's for the OP to deliberate - but with only W, SVS & SV% as cats, and currently holding Binnington/Blackwood (and Shest if he made the deal), I can see fully understand his contemplation of this deal.
