NJ is weird...I dont blame people for not thinking this was Smith's year. And again it's early but he has been good. But the team has Subban, Severson, Vatanen (though he is yet to play), hell even Butcher and Murray can chip in. He obviously will surpass them all but you know how it is when you already have veterans who are meant to play those minutes. But I think he might force his way through...and NJ could end up selling off some of those guys if he keeps it up...especially if NJ fall out of it (I am still not sold considering their division).

If Subban, Vatanen and Severson are all merely adequate at being the PP1 dman and Ty Smith lights it up, just gotta let Ty do his thing otherwise why is he even on the team? It does not surprise me that the young dmen of today are more mobile/versatile/creative offensively.

I like PK though so I was really hoping he would run away with it.

For me the question now is: can he keep up the production for the whole season? Not saying he should be a 1pt/game player, but can we really expect him to put up 35-40pts this year? I realize Smith is in sell high territory, but considering that this season is shorter than usual maybe there is less risk to see the decrease in production that we usually see in the second half of the season.

Even if he can’t sustain this pace this season (TOI would indicate he can’t) I think he holds a lot of value in a keeper/dynasty league. He could be their PP1 guy possibly sooner than later depending on how things play out with Subban and Vatanen. I would expect he would get that shot to start next season at the latest, so long as his play doesn’t fall off an absolute cliff. I haven’t watched any Devils games but from what I have seen he seems quite talented, so hopefully it’s just a matter of time for him to push his way to the top.

Check out https://twitter.com/waveintel/status...054759938?s=21 - read the commentary.

Interesting numbers suggesting Smith/Severson is here to stay as a pairing. Means more like 18-20 mins minimum going fwd, plus his blast on the PP and position patrolling the blue line on PP.

Even if he doesn’t get the minutes total (no SH time), his PP usage and OZone deployment is notable.

    Bodes well for continued production.

I wanted him this year. Ran out of draft picks and couldn't swing a trade...

1 period in the books v Sabres - primary apple for Smith already, playing a 19min pace, Nice!

I snagged him with the last overall pick in our draft...I didn't own the pick initially, but when the pick arrived I offered a future pick for it, and then drafted Smith. Hope he keeps it up.

Thought it would take him another year to start producing but has looked good. I see him take pp1 very soon.

What do you guys think if I had to choose between Ty Smith and Dobson for a young D Man with keeper potential? Feel like Dobson is further along, plays for better team but Smith is more talented?

Toss up. Dobson is a big boy, put up monster junior numbers as well. Smith was stellar in junior as well, back to back defenseman of the year...

Both are putting up solid peripherals....Smith has an extra year of elc, if your league is a cap league......

I own both and have been thrilled with both. Smith I think has higher upside, but Dobson will be really good too. Just wish the Isles were a more offensive team.
