I had a really good 1st for this coming offseason, but traded it plus two 7ths for Dougie Hamilton and Varlamov (NYI handcuff)

I was happy.

Within an hour after, my biggest competition trades with the same GM I did and traded away a 1st in 2021, 3rd in 2021, 2nd in 2022, Kaliyev and Perron for Horvat, Ristolainen and Hoglander.

I feel like he got the better deal. Ugh.

I wouldn’t have been allowed to trade for Horvat as I traded him away in the offseason and you aren’t allowed to acquire a player back for a certain amount of time. That time hasn’t passed yet, but still. Ugh.

I don’t know what I want from you guys, but maybe just tell me you like my deal...

IMO, you both traded a 1st rounder for a keeper:
You got: Hamilton
He got: Horvat (GREAT player in a 6-cat roto league where one of those cats is FOW... I get it.)
I prefer Hamilton as a keeper level.

Now he also got: Risto/Hoglander
But he had to give up: 2nd/3rd/Perron/Kaliyev

Now - I know everybody is losing their shit about Hoglander... but Kaliyev is going to be a nice prospect.
I'd almost say that Kaliyev = Hoglander.

So him giving up a 2nd/3rd/Perron for Risto... that seems like he gave up too much.
Conversely, you gave up a couple 7ths for Varly... that's a good deal.

I think both trades seem very fair.
FOW is a lock stat... so yeah, tough to see him vault to the top of FOW projections (I'd assume) in acquisition of Horvat.

Can you explain this? I am unsure what you mean by "lock stat" unless it's something like it's inherently limited to certain players - mostly centers. I'm now in a roto league with both FOW & FOL as categories, and I'm trying to get a better handle on it. I suspect having both basically nullifies them as they counter each other.

Sorry - bad choice of words.

By "lock", I mean "guaranteed stats".
Horvat is going to take faceoffs.
He's going to win a ton of faceoffs.

The higher count that a stat is... the more sure ("lock") it is to happen.
Guys that take 300sog in a season... they get about 300sog each season.
Guys that win 800fow in a season... they get about 800fow in a season.

But a lower counting stat like PPP... guy might get 30 one season... then 18 the next.
It's not a "lock" to repeat.

In Roto/H2H, I love chasing the higher count stats, like FOW.
If you draft FOW, you'll do well in FOW. And that is why the other guy adding Horvat is so devastating.
Because it means the other guys is going to have a really good finish in the FOW category.

In that league I like your deal yea. His deal is good too though IMO. II love Pengwin7's post about high/low counting stats too. In total agreement with him. I own Horvat on almost every Dynasty league I have because he came cheap and guaranteed FOW. Have been rewarded for patience with him as he's also added some decent G/A and some other peripherals mixed in. It's similar to why I love guys like Tkachuks, E. Kane, Kreider, Suzuki and JT Miller in multi-cat bangers etc.... But without some of those cats, it can drastically alter a players value for sure.
