Default Average Time on Ice as a Category - any thoughts?

I'm new to a league with Average Time on Ice for skaters as a category. My plan is to treat it as I would +/-, meaning as a category I mostly ignore, and let randomness happen. The only plans that made sense are:
    - Get minute-munching all-situation defensemen to help with it as best I can.
    - Avoid offensive specialist forwards who are sheltered with limited minutes, but power play time.

Does anyone have any further strategies?

I dunno how much this would come into play but maybe players on teams that go to OT a lot? Again doesnt seem like a big factor. I think what you listed is pretty much it - guys the coach trusts in all situations so your TOI isn't game script dependant. I guess guys that dont get hurt/don't take a lot of penalties too would help the TOI but again you can just look at TOI to get an idea for that.

I think it's as simple as good players get more ice time. I would probably give it even less consideration than +/-

First off, I love this stat for fantasy purposes as it's a great representation of a player's value to their NHL team. Time on Ice is likely the stat that is the easiest to predict. The best players tend to play the most. This means that your strategy should be to draft the best players!!!

I took it away from my league but it'll make you more conscientious of top six players and minute munching defenders. It is a catastrophe though if someone is injured two minutes into a game and never returns. Your ATOI is blown the rest of the week in that scenario.

Not sure I like that stat a whole lot but, anyway, it has already been said and it's bang on and simple, the best players get the most ice. The only thing I can see doing to help fill that cat is, as has already been said, target those D who play the big minutes. In a banger league this should happen anyway, but in a pts only, well, not so much. That's about all you can do I think. Like +/-, this is a cat I wouldn't agonize over.
