Is the probability at 50/50? You need the 4 division winners to come out the proper standings?
Yeah I guess it's actually 5050...
So the standings outcoming needs to be E, E, W, W (or reverse). Then you need both the same conference win. So chance is 50.50, but probability of having the right 2 teams win isn't 50/50.
I'm no probability master. But getting the standings to E, E, W, W and having the right 2 win can't be 50/50. But I guess E, W, E, W is a thing... yeah it's 50/50 lol
I guess the probability of E, E, W, W of having a EvE is higher than E, W, E, W standings. hmmmmmmmmm
Bolder prediction, I learn probability of the scenario before it happens.

Get out some red & green M&Ms and have some fun putting them in 4 cups and taking them out.
It's not going to be exactly 50/50 with the 16/15 E/W distribution... but it's going to be really, really close.
Same theory as whether a couple having kids will have GG or BB... those counts are about similar to GB or BG.
If you separate 16 girls and 15 boys into groups of 4... and then end up doing some contest to get to two... there's 50/50 odds that it might be a same-sex championship battle.
But probability changes based on the 2 different types of standings:
Option 1
E, E, W, W or W, W, E, E.
This set of standings would suggest a higher possibility than 50/50, of having the same conference face each other
Option 2
E, W, E, W or W, E, W, E
This would need 1 team to perform an upset, making the probability lower than 50/50.
I get myself very spun around when thinking of probability because then I start thinking about actual real life standings. Cause everything could happen between now and then so then my thoughts get derailed.
Ah whatever, hope my spiral of my own thoughts entertained you guys.

Here's an update on how my bold predictions fared:
1. Montreal misses the playoffs, leading to the firing of GM Marc Bergevin. Montreal didn't miss the playoff, but MB is on the hot seat. Part of this could still happen if the Habs lose badly in the first round.
2. A goalie not playing for a New York team wins the Calder. Nope. But if rookie goalies had started more games, this could have been a win. Nedeljkovic, Kahkonen, Lankinen and Vanecek all have a chance to be nominated, but won't beat out Kaprizov or Robertson.
3. Two teams will finish with less than 50 games played due to COVID. No.
4. We will see a player flirt with 50 goals in 50 games. Matthews made this happen for a good chunk of the season. Going to chalk it up as a half point.
5. A defenseman wins the Hart trophy (unless number 4 happens). Not gonna happen because of number eight on this list.
6. Fighting skyrockets, with at least 10 players involved in at least 10 fights each. (By comparison, last year saw only one player involved in 10 fights). Fighting is up this season, but no one reached 10 fights. Brady Tkachuk led the way with seven.
7. Zero coaches are fired during the season. Three fired in-season, two fired since their seasons ended.
8. McDavid reaches 100 points. Sweet! I'll count this one as a win.
9. Washington finishes with a bottom-five power play. They're third-best right now. So way off.
10. Pittsburgh trades Malkin to the Kings. Obviously never happened. Maybe this offseason.
So overall, 1.5 out of 10, with still an outside chance of Bergevin being fired. I'll take it as far as bold predictions go.
Writer of the weekly Top 10 column.
12-team Keeper pool, straight points for forwards & dmen. Goalies get: 2 points per win, 3 per shutout, 1 point per assist & 1 point per shootout loss.
League champ in 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020 and 2022.
Top 8 forwards, 5 dmen and 2 goalies count.
We keep 15 players (any position) plus two rookies.
Forwards: Panarin, Ovechkin, Kopitar, Stamkos, Tuch, Rust, Marchessault, Pavelski, Miller, Bertuzzi, Stone, Kakko, Brown, Stankoven, Kovalenko
Defence: Hedman, Fox, Matheson, Thrun, Jiricek
Goalies: Kochetkov, Talbot, Vasilevskiy, Campbell, Schmid
I did not get around to making these before the season.....but I'll damn sure read through and laugh at all of your bad takes now!!
Great call on McDavid for 100.
My summary:
3, 5, 9, 10 - I'll take some points on these. We'll see with the Leafs, but they look strong.
1, 2, 4, 7, 8 - Absolute MISSES. LOL. Just way way off!
6 - Mikko Koivu retired. He's not a lock for HHOF and didn't cite family needs... but he's a fave of mine. I'm really surprised Thornton & Marleau made it fully through the year. I thought maybe Jaromir Jagr might actually be this guy and "retire" from his Czech league! Instead, he made them champs @ age 49. The ageless wonder!
