Not true. Typically players on bad teams have poor +\- while players on good teams have decent +\-. You like avoiding productive players from Buffalo or Arizona or Patrick Laine because they play on generally crap teams? It’s a stupid stat and it does not in any way reflect accurately a players ability to drive play. That’s been proven time and again. It’s more a reflection of team play and an extremely arbitrary one at that. It’s terrible and nothing more than having a ‘chance’ stat category in your league.

I’m indifferent. Other than for a handful of players on really bad teams, it doesn’t usually affect my planning for who I draft. To be honest the only upside I see to keeping it is to balance out skater to goalie category ratios.

Agreed but I’d much rather see something like FOW for that.

I used to hate +/- but with time, I've learned to like its randomness. I know it's not a great reason to like it but it provides a fun category where you see movement in the standings almost every night.

We aren't building a team that can do well on the ice. We are building a team that does well in our fantasy format and for this league that includes +/-. It's no more of a chance stat than anything else, providing another category to incorporate in our pick decision.
What I like about +/- is how easy it is to count. It's obvious whether a player gets a plus or minus on a play. Whereas the category of Hits, it's not. Some rinks will count hits a lot more leniently than other rinks.

Yeah, I notice that a lot doing my skater projections. Montreal players always have a bloated number of hits while Toronto players have suspiciously more blocks than other teams. Arena bias is real and can factor in fantasy.

Many years ago the Dobber tier leagues (IIRC) had PIM as the 6th category - which used to be the Yahoo! default 6th.
Then it was changed to Hits - which IS an improvement.

I'm not a huge fan of Hits either... since most hitters are effectively taking themselves out-of-the-play.
    But... it's better than PIM.

And fantasy hockey is supposed to be "fun" - and PIM was fun... and HITS is kinda fun too.
Yahoo! is a little short on options for categories.

Someday... hopefully they have Corsi or Fenwick (shot differential) as those are improvements on +/- (which is influenced by goalie quality).
But... for now, I think having a category for a grit-guy (Hits) and having a category for a solid defensive player (+/-) is good.

There's not much for real NHL players that are good two-way/defensive players.
Some people will say "BLK" - but that's just a shot taken that somebody gets a body in front of.
The best defenders will keep that shot from ever getting taken in the first place.

So... re: +/-... purely to keep other teams from scoring... that's half of the +/- equation... and that's why it's a nice category to include: for the defensive side of hockey.

Agree that Yahoo is a little light and the addition of some of the advanced cats would be fun. I too prefer Hits too PIMs but prefer PIMs to +/-. I prefer anything to +/-. It is a pure chance category. Any cat where quite frequently the biggest factor is the timing of a line change is crap.

For the very little it actually matters to me, I prefer +/- > PIM > Hits.

What happened with horrorfan's spot in this league?
Who was given that spot? Why?

I was given the spot. 2 years ago I was in the league and placed a solid 3rd.
Due to January being the busiest month of the year for me. Holidays, Work, Fire fighting, and it being kiding season on the farm (68 kids!) all the while navigating a pandemic/lockdowns I forgot all about signing up to draft in January (that doesn't normally happen).

I have no knowledge of why Horrorfan (or who it even was) wasn't returning. Seeing how I was never relegated (standings wise) I just stepped off the bench back into the game.

    Well... "placed a solid 3rd"...

I bumped that thread for you.
Both you and I got autodrafted that year... it was an interesting season.

The difference... perhaps... is that I'm not backpatting myself for my finish that year... since the Yahoo 'bot' drafted both of our teams.
So... maybe, don't act like that 3rd place finish was all your skill.
(I've got that league screen open right now... you made 11 moves all year: LEAST IN LEAGUE. You left $61 in budget unspent: MOST IN LEAGUE.
    The Yahoo auto-bot drafted you NINE top 60 players: Panarin 4, Ovechkin 10, Malkin 26, Couturier 34, Scheifele 39, Perron 35, Schenn 42, RNH 50, Tavares 58)

And - I don't recall how it went last year... but typically there is an auto-mated invite to the league that's hard to miss.
Not sure how you missed it.

Anyways - you are right, you didn't get relegated... so maybe now is a fine time to have an opportunity to come back.
That said - you don't seem to have self-drafted a Dobber Tier team (hockey OR football) in about 3 years... for whatever reasons/excuses... so maybe pull back the "I deserve to be here" a tad.

    Lol...
The only thing my post did was specifically address your questions.
I stated placing 3rd showing I wasn't in relegation position.
9 pts away from 2nd 7 ahead of 4th with barely any room in categories to move up or down. Text book solid 3rd.
If you want to make ridiculous claims about it... whatever only looks bad on you.

I don't want to talk about the Football draft

There's NOTHING "solid" about an upper standings finish on a team that YOU.DIDNT.DRAFT.
    Don't call it solid.

The Yahoo auto-bot drafted you 9 top 60 players.

    You.GOT.LUCKY.
Especially with only making 11 moves and only spending $39 on some shitty bid goalies.

    You got LUCKY.
Ain't no "solid" about missing your draft and finishing 3rd based on what the autodrafting did for you.

You SHOULD have been relegated with missing your draft and putting in minimal activity.

    "Solid".
    Psh.

Solid 12 points more than 5th.

You wrote a big long post about luck, when no one said it wasn't lucky.
I said it was solid (firm or stable).
It was a solidified 3rd place finish.
