    Haha exactly.

Man I was hoping Detroit would swoop in and help their salary situation out but looks like they might be ok now.

I often think the same thing when something happens that Lou can take advantage of.

He sits the guy down in a chair centred over a sheet of plastic where he can clearly see a shadowy figure holding a ball-peen hammer. Lou walks up and tells him, "You're going to be doing X,Y,Z, or you'll be sleeping with the fishes, see?" And wha-la, Lou gets his way.

On a more serious note, I was reading The Athletics article on this and Boychuk will be going on LTIR so there will be some cap relief but also some juggling that needs to be done as well.

Apparently he didn't see this Matheson hit coming due to his vision.

Thats very concerning, Matheson was in front of him the whole time and he didn't see him. For his short and long term health its a decision that needed to be made. Too bad because he seems like a solid, hard working, do the right thing kind of guy.

someone on that isles board I frequent knew a player was going on LTIR / retirement but his source wouldnt give him more than that so we all assumed Ladd or Clutter . From time to time Ladd posts videos of himself doing workouts and his knees look pretty good so I had doubts it could be him . Clutterbuck has some back issues and doesnt have any feeling in some fingers due to the skate slice / wrist injury few years back (nerve damage)so it wouldnt shock me if he went on LTIR as well

Considering Ladd played in the playoffs, are they capable of putting him on the LTIR?

Does that matter? Playing in the previous years playoffs?

I believe so, yes. If he was healthy enough to play in the playoffs, he cant be seriously hurt. Then again, that's why I posted it as a question.

Boychuk played in the playoffs. Having been declared fit to play in August has no relevance to being declared unfit in January, The optics might look fishy but that's about it.

Upon confirming same with the insurer he "medically retires" (or some similar term) and the insurance pays out. Under the CBA the player is retired and no longer has a cap-hit.

That is my guess. Injured Players under contract would be very reluctant to say "retire" without pre-confirmation of insurance payout as the "voluntary" nature of retirement would indicate the player has given up on rehabbing and attempting to get into game shape, which could void or reduce the insurance payout. Given its an eye injury (and presumably permanent) it's likely not something that will improve any more with time and insurance is prepared to payout. Compared to say a shoulder injury where the player has a duty to continually rehab and stay in shape in hopes of one day playing again.

Just a guess though, would love any insight on the actual situation.
It's unlikely that Johnny Boychuk would have much (if any) insurance on this contract or his future earnings since he signed the deal when he was 31 and he was guaranteed to earn the full $42,000,000. When the fans hear that a contract in insured, that is by the team and not by the player. Assuming this contract was insured by the team, Boychuk would still get his salary (assuming he does not actually retire and void the contract) but the Islanders would not be on the hook for paying the $12,000,000 left on it. The insurance company would pay for it. It's likely that Boychuk will remain on the the Islanders' salary cap until the contract runs out.

the final 2 years of his contract (this year and next) have 2.75 m bonus 1.25 salary (4 mil each season total )So he's technically making 8 mil total this season and next , not 12 since some of it was front loaded in earlier seasons .
