    Default Question: Kids skates

Hoping some of the parents on the fourm can give me a hand. I don't have kids, but my niece/goddaughter turned 2 this summer, and I am going to get her first pair of skates so I can take her skating this winter.

Question is, what style would you go for - hockey, figure skates, other? I have only ever had hockey skates, so really unsure if there are any pros or cons to each.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I just went through this last year with our 3 year old daughter. My wife was a figure skating coach and I love hockey...so we asked each other what should we start her on...easy answer BOTH. They both have their pros and cons. But it comes down to each individual ,so let her try them out and then let her decide what she likes better

Hockey skates to learn in. There’s no front picks to deal with. The stride is different with each obviously but at that age when they are shuffling there’s no chance of accidentally toe picking.

"recreational" skates, these more often than not have a buckle setup instead of laces. She is going to outgrow them quick so buying anything expensive isn't advised.

I'd talk to the parent and see what, if any, intention they have for her skating future. Hockey or figure skating? If they don't have one, I'd go hockey skates because theirs no pick in the front and easier to learn on. If they are considering figure skating as a winter sport or hobby for her, get the figure skates to get her learning early.

Thanks everyone! Neither of the parents can skate, so I am being tasked with all skating lol.

I was looking at the recreational ones yesterday, and may go that rotute. Shes going to need a new pair again next year so really just getting whatever will be easist to teach on, which seems to be recreational or hockey.

Get a used pair of rec skates. Easy to put on. Easy to take off. The pair you get are only going be used a handful of times for short periods. Ask around in the local parent groups. There is always tons of gear for toddlers begging to be used. Cool Aunts, Uncles, and Grandparents are always buying little kids awesome sports gear and the stuff never wears out as the kids grow too quickly.

If you are truly intent on teaching the young one to skate you have to make it fun. Having to go though the process of skates tied and untied and tied and... is painful for everyone involved. Especially as the kid is going to want them off 5 minutes after they start, then want them back on 3 minutes after taking them off. Velcro is your friend!

    Have fun.
