Great deal for both. This is going to look like a bargain next year even. And the pool of available money gets smaller...

    Is Johnson perma-LTIR now?
Plus Cole is still under contract and he's no slouch as a third pairing guy.

Yeah... this is a nice solid contract for the Avs.
They're really set up well with their team contracts.
Just a lot of really good possession-plus players.
He's not going to be required to bring a lot of points with Makar & Girard - but having a solid 6D is critical for teams these days.
One weak pairing can just kill a team... and I think the Avs are well beyond any D-weaknesses going forward.

Am I the only person who thinks $4.1M is an awful lot of money to be paying for your #5 dman? It makes it even worse when you are paying $4.25M for your #6 dman. The Avs now have a 3rd d pairing that is going to cost them $8.35M for the upcoming season.

great deal. Cole is pending UFA and won’t be brought back at that AAV.

Remember when people were questioning what Sakic was doing and “if” he would make a good GM.

I don't see Toews & Graves as their bottom pairing. Upthread, Timmins/Byram were listed as the middle pair - but they have a combined 2 NHL games.

The Avs are very likely to lose a defenseman to Seattle. Protect Makar, Girard, and one of Toews/Graves/Johnson(NMC - must waive). I view this as setting them up to lose a D comfortably.

You have a point, but this isn’t cash strapping the team is it? Balancing their $cap hit/position.

You have a point, but this isn’t cash strapping the team this year is it? Then again, ask me next year when they look to resign Makar!

Exactly. They have the room this year but they are not looking so great for next season. They will have to re-sign their starting goalie, their captain, their best dman, their 2nd line LWer and an entire 4th line. And by then, there's a good chance that Toews is their 6th best dman as Byram and Timmins both could be better than him by that time.
