    Default Darhorse pick suggestion

    Guys,

Do you suggest any darkhorse to make the NHL this year? Like, any top unknown NCAA/late round prospect from previous years that could make it?

When you say "make it", do you mean this year, or ever?

A couple years from the NHL.. but one of my favorite late round prospect grabs has been Alex Beaucage. Early in the season, but is currently goal/game in the Q.

Maybe I'm biased, but I think Jack Rathbone has a legitimate shot to make the Canucks.

Given their cap situation (currently over), and at least 1 open spot on the back end (I would say 2 as I don't have faith in Benn).

Competition is Olli Juolevi and Brogan Rafferty. Only thing is Rafferty is a R shot, so might have a leg up (plus older and AHL experience).

Realistically looks like Rafferty will be 3rd pair RHD and Benn, Juolevi, Rathbone compete for the 3rd pair LHD spot. Realistically probably Benn is the 6th/7th guy and they keep one of OJ or JR too and swap him in and out with Benn here and there depending on match-up and overall play.
(Jalen Chatfield is the other guy on the RHD consideration but I think it's Rafferty's job to lose based on last year's AHL season)

Rafferty needs to clear waivers as well I believe while Rathbone is waiver-exempt. That could come into play.

Gonna be him, Rafferty or Juolevi for sure -- perhaps a bit of a rotation. But they'll need one body from the farm to play.
(And I should've read the rest of the posts before writing--seems this is a bit redundant!)

I think they'll stick with one of Rafferty/Chatfield on the right side and the LHD one is the battle to watch. Either Benn as a veteran presence vs. certain teams and Juolevi/Rathbone vs. others. Benn is just so slow I'm not sure how much he gets in the lineup - if he doesn't get sent to the AHL himself to alleviate cap space. That said, not sure VAN wants to go with an all-rookie 3rd D pairing, although there might not be many minutes anyways (Hughes-Myers, Edler-Schmidt)
