Oilers have signed Kris Russell to a one-year extension. I'm hearing it is between $1m-$1.5m and no NMC. Makes sense for both sides. Ensure Oilers have a Dman eligible to be exposed in expansion draft and Russell knows he is either in EDM or SEA.

So basically Klefbom misses the whole year and is ineligible for expansion, and then they protect Nurse/Jones/Bear and leave Russell exposed and Larsson unsigned. Seems smart from here

It's a terrible idea no matter how you look at it. It means that not only is Russell staying in Edmonton this year but that he's going to be in Edmonton next year. Neither of those are good for the Oilers. There will be 10 dmen better than Russell waived during training camp.

No, it doesn't exactly mean he's staying in Edmonton next year. He might be, but he's also an affordable option to the expansion draft and they needed someone to expose so he's a possible expansion selection.

We really don't know what's going to happen.

Players who do not play 40 games of the 2020-21 season OR a combined 70 games between the 2019-20 and the 2020-21 season are exempt. If Oscar Klefbom is out for the season, this will make him exempt. (Source: https://www.coppernblue.com/2020/10/...xpansion-draft)

This is based on the Vegas expansion rules. I would imagine the games played numbers will be adjusted for the shortened seasons. The rules also stated that players who were out for the full previous season MAY be exempt from the expansion draft. It was determined on a case by case basis. The rule was designed so teams could not use players who had announced that they would never be able to play again as their available players.

If Klefbom is out for all of next season but is expected to be healthy to play the following season, it's doubtful he would be exempt from the expansion draft.

They very well could've gotten somebody better to be able to expose, but if it's cheap enough they can always bury his contract next year.

This a one year extension for $1.25M on a still useful depth Dman that can be exposed for expansion purposes. Let's not get too excited here. Russell isn't all that bad that people want to make him out to be, just not worth the $4M he will earn for one more season.
