    This is correct.

I find this hilarious that Leafs fans think this is a good move.
    This is also correct.

But as long as Keefe is fine sitting some combination of Spezza/Thornton/Simmonds or all three if others prove to be better options, at least they were cheap enough gambles that that is an option.

Looks like EB has Dermott and Mikheyev projected at about $6 mil between the two. So they need to cut about that much from the budget to sign both. Not sure where that's coming from.

I disagree. Simmonds brings an element that they lack; sandpaper. They didn't need a 50 year old apple chucker slowing them down. If the 4th line does end up being Simmonds, Thornton and Spezza, this could very well be the slowest line in the NHL.

    To quote Torts:

Joe’s a heck of a player, but here’s a player popping off about our team, and Joe hasn’t won a (expletive) thing in this league. He could go down as a player, being one of the better players in our league never to win anything.

I'm too lazy to look up waivers and such, but if the Leafs sign Mikheyev to the same contract Mangiapane just signed (which seems reasonable? 2x$2.425) an opening day lineup of:

    Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
    Mikheyev-Tavares-Marner
    Robertson-Kerfoot-Vesey
    Spezza-Thornton-Simmonds

    Reilly-Brodie
    Muzzin-Holl
    Lehtonen-Bogosian

    Andersen
    Campbell

Leaves them with $638,967 in cap space. They could carry no extra players and slowly start accumulating cap space. They could start with Lehtonen in the minors and a cheaper Sandin/Liljegren/Rosen/Marincin to gain a bit more space, and/or they could send Campbell to the minors and start with Dell as their backup and gain some cap space. An opening night roster of:

    Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
    Mikheyev-Tavares-Marner
    Robertson-Kerfoot-Vesey
    Spezza-Thornton-Simmonds

    Reilly-Brodie
    Muzzin-Holl
    Marincin-Bogosian

    Andersen
    Dell

Would be the cheapest realistic option (unless you replace Vesey with lets say Petan/Agostino/Hallinder/Malgin) and would leave them with $1,138,967 in cap space, which again they could carry no extra players and start accumulating cap space or they could use that space to carry an extra F or D.

Now reasonable people can argue whether they would be willing to send down or put on waivers any of Engvall, Vesey, Campbell at the risk of losing and/or pissing those players off, but those would be the cap options.

    Definitely completely forgot about Dermott.

    That's just cap stuff though.

To be clear, I think this is a terrible idea unless they're planning for Spezza, Thornton, and Simmonds to spend a reasonably significant amount of time in the pressbox.

One of Kerfoot or Dermott pretty much has to go, if they want to have extras. Mikheyev should sign for between 1.5 and 2mil.
This roster is looking solid, although still very suspect defensively.

As someone who watches a lot of Leaf games, this is exciting. They got something on every line to pay attention to.

Mikheyev goes to arbitration Wednesday. He's at least going to want what Mangiapane got if not a little more. His scoring was better than Mangiapane's (23 pts in 39 games vs 32 in 68). That right there gets him to probably $3 mil...

    Maybe.
I sure wouldn't pay someone 3mil+ based on 39 game sample.
Mangiapane's a safer play - bigger sample size and more goals per game. 2mil for Mikheyev is fair. Maybe 2.2 deriving the goals per game math.

To me, this is just Dubas playing Fantasy GM with his heart instead of his head again, much like the JT signing.

Couldn't be happier for the Leafs!

Thornton played effectively as a 3rd line center last year. 4th line for 700k is zero risk. You can press box him for that price. I think its funny that anyone would get bent out of shape for that signing. Pretty sure Corey Perry just proved theres absolutely zero downside in making a signing like this for the league minimum
