According to Lebrun, the breakdown is $3.5 M, $5 M, $6.5 M. This is the second back-loaded contract the Sens have done this season after the Matt Murray extension. Seems weird for them to be doing this.

Possibly a sign they'll expose to Seattle?
If Seattle doesn't nab him, it's the same money either way. If they do nab him, they've paid less than market value for the year?

Yeah, with the expansion... backloading a contract makes good sense.
Also - OTT probably short on funds and will have more with increased attendance as team starts winning.
Kind of smart, I like it.
Man... Florida though... that new 2nd line... is it the worst in hockey?!?
3yrs is odd to be unless that's the longest he could get. If I'm going to Ottawa, I'd want a NTC and prolly over 4yrs when they'll def be good and seriously competing.

He got more AAV than I expected at this point in the game for free agency. Good for him.

"Cleavage is like the sun. You can look, but dont stare.. Unless you're wearing sunglasses."
For a team like Ottawa, these backloading deals make sense. Their obvious goal is to accumulate as many contracts as possible where the cap hit is lower than the cash outflow. My opinion is this isn't a short term goal, but rather a consistent organizational goal that will continue in near-term perpetuity. So for the first 2 years of this deal, Ottawa gets a good player for costing them $8.5M cash with a $10M cap charge. These 2 years correlate with 2 years of flat cap. This also gives every other team in the league 2 years to adjust their transactions, contracts, etc. to a non-growth cap, as well as 2 years for fans to fully re-enter buildings.. In 2022-23, the cap goes up to $82.5M. Not a huge increase, but an increase nonetheless. Theoretically, stadiums will be back to 100% capacity. At this point, cash rich teams will likely have no problems acquiring a player who makes more real dollars than his cap hit, will likely have a contract where a player makes less than their cap hit, and will pay Ottawa additional assets to make such a swap. If his production tanks, from a buyout perspective the last year will be more expensive than a standard 3x5M contract, but the total cash out will be a little less.
I think it's highly likely Dadonov is kept for the first 2 years of his contract and traded to a cash-rich organization for year 3.
From Dadanov's perspective, escrow is set at 20% in year 1 of his deal, 18% in year 2 of his deal, and 12% in year 3 of his deal. From a money in pocket perspective, this structure is also highly favorable to him.
If Taylor Hall hadn't already shuffled off to Buffalo, this might be the most bizarro signing in a very strange free agent season. I actually like this deal for Ottawa in terms of fit, money and term. What makes it bizarro is that a team early in a rebuild, with a horrible owner who doesn't seem to care about winning, did the signing.
Sens have to get to the cap floor and if they have a top line scoring winger willing to sign with them for a few years while the kids develop then why not? He'll provide some offense to help keep the fans interested and maybe do some mentoring as a veteran.
His deal will be up and off the books long before the Sens have to worry about any sort of cap crunch (as if Melnyk ever spends to the cap anyway).
