it would be the honorable thing to retire 44 games in, but let’s just hope he can avoid collisions with Ryan Reaves and/or Tom Wilson for that long. :-)

Interesting that #11 Messier ended things 11 games short. Apropos perhaps? I don't remember the end for Mess clearly, but seems he could've signed on for one more...
Jagr didn't really get the chance. I think Marleau plays it out--although if COVID shortens the season, it could be tough. He did lose a fair number of games due to lockouts/COVID compared to Howe.

Does this mean Jumbo is coming back for one more in SJ as well?

I heard that he will re-sign and they are just working on a new clause that we have not seen before.

Its called a MMC - 'Must Move Clause' - and basically its a clause that at the trade deadline if Thornton is not confident that the Sharks are a legit playoff contender then he submits a list of 5 teams and the Sharks must move him to one of those said teams. The Must Move Clause once initiated and the player is traded to one of the 5 teams... automatically transforms in to a Full NMC. This would prevent the General Managers from sneakily pulling a 3-way trade and Thornton end up on a non-playoff team.

He stopped playing at the end of the 03-04 season. 04-05 was wiped out by the lockout. So to come back he would have had to come back after a year off. He is also quoted at the time of his official announcement in 2005...
"I never thought about any individual records," Messier said.
"Coming back to break any records, especially that record wasn't
    all that appealing to me."

I think it's a bit of lip service to a fanbase who really only had an overpayment to Labanc, then traded for Dubnyk.
