There’s your cap relief for Vegas. Great pickup for Vancouver. Terrific D-man.

Nice acquisition by Vancouver. They need to upgrade Benn. Should be interesting to see who they pair with Hughes.

In a vacuum, a 3rd for Schmidt is great value. VGK needed to clear cap by tomorrow, so that's what happens. His price tag relative to Van's cap space is a bit concerning, given that they still have to either acquire or promote from within a top 6 forward (to replace Toffoli) and two defencemen, and have only one NHL-calibre RD (the massively overpaid Tyler Myers, who's suspect defensively, and yes, Schmidt can play on the right but that's not the same thing).

Letting Stecher walk continues to be the mystery here (not because he's amazing but because he's amazing for the price, and they need RD). Letting Markstrom and Tanev go made sense; letting Toffoli go was iffy but not terrible. But I can't find anything good about letting Stecher go, relative to Van's cap situation and defensive needs. So I'm not sold on the roster decisions overall. Basically, this is a good deal for a good player, and Van is better than they were before they traded for him. They're just not as good as they could have been with better asset management.

Nice pickup for low cost for the Canucks. $5.9 million through age 33 isn’t bad, and the actual cash outlay is better as Schmidt was paid $8.8 million in year 1. Also, like Brodie, Schmidt is a lefty who prefers to play on the right side so he will slide nicely into their top 4.

Yeah, agreed that in a vacuum this is a great move, but unfortunately this is kind of still not really enough. Still some time to make some moves but I can't help but feel like there have been some bad mistakes made (letting Stecher walk, letting Toffoli walk, not moving any cap space whatsoever).

This team is still worse than it was last season. I don't want to be pessimistic but can't help but feel baited.

Does Vegas start to gain a reputation of shipping out newly signed players?

Seems like this is happening a bit too much.

Stastny, Schmidt, Miller, and Haula. These guys have all been shipped out after signing within a couple of yrs of getting convinced to sign with Vegas.

    Schmidt is a heck of a D-man.
I remember being intrigued that Vegas took him, instead of Grubauer, for their WAS pick.

His numbers speak for themselves, three straight 30+pt seasons (on decreasing GP counts).
Btw 5-15ppp each of last 3 seasons for VGK, manning the PP2.
+52 over the last 3 years... which is probably a top 25 NHL count over that span. (Confirmed 20th best in NHL)

Equally impressive is that he (& VGK) have played 47 playoff games in those last 3 years, with Schmidt putting up 20pts and +9.
He's been an absolute rock on the VGK ES1 D-pairing with Brayden McNabb.

re: VGK. Pietrangelo, obviously, is an upgrade.. and his RH stick works well with McNabb (LH) and/or Theodore (LH). VGK is a better team with AP... so this was a good move for them, upgrade for team quality.
re: VAN. All of Hughes, Edler, and Schmidt are LH. Only Myers is RH. Bit of a hit for VAN to lose two top sixers... especially on the RH-side. Going to be a tough 10-20gp transition for Schmidt to find his chemistry... but he'll be fine... and you VAN fans will learn to love his game and his attitude on/off ice. Great personality.

Both Cody Ceci and Sami Vatanen are still RH D-men available. I can see VAN signing one... at the right price. Vatanen, especially, would be a nice add, I think.

I understand what you are saying but I think there are still reasons to be optimistic. They found the hardest piece which is the top 4 dman and they paid a very small price for him. While I would have loved Toffoli resigning, a lot players will look good with Petersson and Miller. There are still a few free agents left. Dadanov or Granlund would look great in Vancouver. Plus, I liked Stecher too but that is the kind of player you should be able to find relatively easily. Vancouver still has the big pieces in place and reasons to be optimistic for their future. .

I like this add. In your mind is this a better get than Barrie? Also to truly be successful this offseason I think we need to get at least two more pieces. Top 6 forward. Hoffman, Dadanov or Grandlund and another D hopefully Vatanen.

If you're the GM in Vegas, which would you rather have: Schmidt at $5.9 for 5 years (age 33) or Pietrangelo at $8.8 for 7 years (age 37)?

Pietrangelo is a superior talent but is the talent gap worth the extra term and price? Strategically, I think I would have kept Schmidt.

Regardless of how poorly or well Benning has managed the offseason as a whole, when you get the opportunity to acquire Schmidt for a 3rd rounder, it's a good day.

I’m a better armchair GM when I leave that question to my “numbers guy”. Lol

Seriously though it doesn’t appear that Benning has made any cap room.
In Stecher they knew what they had. A hard working D for reasonable money.
Would love to see a Vatanen here as well. Need to find the money though.

Agreed Schmidt for a 3rd is a great deal. He does address a need. Agree again that fans will love him and his game.

Schmidt was a fantastic add. Way to stick it to the team who put themselves in a bad spot by spending too much money. A 3rd for a Top 4 D is larceny.
I don't know why they didn't buy out Eriksson - that would have saved them $1.3 million. Maybe they can LTIR Ferland? Benn, Beagle, Sutter, Baertschi - all contracts that they would like to make disappear. Tough to do.
