If the end result of this is Rasmus plays more, signing Tanev over Brodie is a net win. Otherwise, it’s probably bad.
Calgary played Brodie like a 1 even though he was a 4. If they play Tanev like a 4, Calgary’s defence overall will improve.

I actually think this is pretty reasonable for Tanev. Odds are the first couple years are going to be pretty good, and the second two years might see some lower quality play, but overall as far as free agent signings go i think this is okay. Good luck to Tanev and Marky in Calgary!

4 days later and this deal continues to look worse.

All would have been preferable to this contract not to mention Vatanen and Hamonic still on the market. Worst case scenario, you could have waited and signed Tanev 10 days into FA and gotten a cheaper deal. Or traded a 3rd for Schmidt. Just yuck.

Seeing how little UFA movement there has been in the UFA market, this deal looks more and more like a disaster.
Flames could have had at least 2 and maybe 3 of Granlund, Hoffman, Vatanen, Hamonic for less money and shorter contracts. What an overstep.
