This is one of the side-effects of the cap era that I really don't like. Lundqvist should have been a Ranger for life, and would have been one if not for the cap. Generally, I like the salary cap, but not in this situation.

Got the first part correct. Now he has to sign with Washington.
This is also the best move for the franchise. They are in great hands going with Shesterkin and Georgiev for the next few years.

I think him going to the Sharks makes a lot of sense. San Jose likes its veterans and needs a netminder change. They also have the cap space if they choose to go that route.

Its a bitter pill to swallow for this NYR fan
Consider Sim Hockey because guys who play shutdown minutes, deflect shots and clear creases build championships. Yet in fantasy they litter the unwanted UFA lists.
I hear you man. I hope I don’t have to go through this with Price someday but it seems likely. It sucks to see someone who has given his heart and soul and prime years to a club go through this. His number should go up in the garden as soon as he decides to call it. So too should his HOF call. Class act and one of the best in the game for a long time.

I have little doubt that Davidson and Gorton went to Hank to discuss this openly and explain their side of things and gave Hank options. I dont know if Lundqvist just assumed they would never do this to him or what, but I am pretty confident when I say that various options (retirement, trade) were put in front of him and he chose to stand his ground. His full NMC really tied managements hands on what they really wanted to do.
Unfortunately for Lundqvist, this is NOT a great time to be a FA goalie, especially when we look at his numbers the past couple seasons. He hasn't been trending in the right direction for some time now. His one saving grace might be his decent playoff play in the play-ins.

I'm sure he wishes he accepted a trade in the past few years now. I know there was always speculation on that.
Very depressing way to finish off your career with NYR. I bet he really wanted to go out on his own terms.
