1st overall prospect - Makar or a Goalie?

Hi all,

New league (24 teams) I managed to get 1st Overall for the prospect draft (all prospects under 120GP / 60gp for goalies) NOT including 2020 prospects. Fairly vast amount of league stats that can be seen here (just a screenshot) https://gyazo.com/27286435af6eec8e29052d903333100b

4LW, 4RW, 4C, 6D, 4Bench, 2G

Goalies - Minimum 3 starts a week between them.

My first thought is obviously Makar, but should I consider someone like Shesty or Samsonov given the amount of managers (24) and 2 active goalie spots (don't necessarily need to be always playing but 3 starts a week needed between).

What would you do? Based on last years stats Helle and Vasi are top 10 players, with about 5 other goalies rounding out the top 50

There is also the Hughes (J & Q) and Kakko debate too.

how do your goalies look? would love to add Igor as a rookie pick but yeah Makar is very intriguing...i think in this case you draft position of need....

Makar would be my choice.

Makar hands down. Hes an established stud at age 21.....the goalies you mentioned are still lottery tickets

Prospect draft before the Inaugural so my goalies are non-existent... yet haha

Makar for me. Safest pick you can make. You need 6 D, and he's one that you play every time he's playing.

Shesterkin for me. It's much harder to find and acquire young stud goalies.

We just completed our inaugural drafts for a new dynasty 12 team league - both Pro & Minors. In our Minors draft, all skaters with less than 100 GP and goalies with less than 50 GP were eligible to be drafted.

The top 5 picks were:

1. Makar
2. Q Hughes
3. Lafreniere
4. Shesterkin
5. Sorokin

I picked 9th in the Pro draft which was completed prior to the Minors draft. For the Minors draft, we started with the reverse order from our Pro draft so I was picking 4th. I picked Shesterkin as my strategy was to pick whoever was left from the top 4 players that were actually picked as they were also the top 4 players in my queue.

In your case, I would pick Shesterkin. As Axe said, stud G are hard to come by and by picking Shesty you can add a more seasoned G in your inaugural draft.

I really don't like the idea of passing on a sure-thing in Makar for a goalie who hasn't played much in the NHL yet. We have seen so many stud goalies struggle to start their careers (Hellebuyck, Markstrom, Lehner). Goalies tend to take time to adjust to the NHL. I'm not saying that Shesterkin is guaranteed to struggle, but I'm not sure I'd pass on Makar in this situation, just to be safe.

Except few exceptions, the value of goalies tend to be a bit voodoo stuff.

Alot of the leagues im in I've had no problem trading for Makar or Hughes or any D for that matter but trying to obtain a decent goalie the price is beyond ridiculous...im going Shesty here all day...

I’d ask how your goaltending looks otherwise. Goaltending is so mercurial and new potential “future” stars will come and go. I’d bet on the blue chip piece that you know is going to produce - like Makar or Q Hughes. Demko would be another one I’d look at - but maybe round two?

I would take Q. Hughes over Makar any day, Calder trophies be damned. That said I think Jack is going to be a beast and would be very tempted here. Makar and Q. Hughes will produce a lot of assists but may not even be all that valuable in your format given the scoring categories. Not sure Jack will be much better either in terms of winning faceoffs and having some physicality to his game.

Kirby Dach would also be hard to resist but I'd go for the sure thing in Quinn Hughes
