MONTREAL - Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced today that the team has agreed to terms on a four-year contract extension with defenseman Jeff Petry (until the end of the 2024-25 season). The deal has an average annual value of $6.25 million.

Team announced it as a $6.25 M AAV. Huge signing. And I can tell you this, being on a team that has a chance to win is very important to Petry. Montreal’s surprise performance in Return to Play I bet played a factor in him being willing to extend.

The last year might hurt a bit, but reasonable in order to limit the cap hit.
It's a good price tag for a solid #2 dman who delivers in all facets of the game.
Points-only keeper league. 12 teams. Keep any 12 players. Dress 12F - 6D - 2G.

I like it. It's four years, not six or more which is what too many players get. AAV won't hurt the team considering what he brings to the table.

I dunno...the contract kicks in for his age 34 season and goes through age 37. I know this is probably the going rate, but I don't see this as positive as the previous posters. One encouraging factor is that he's only played 680 games so he may have less mileage than the average 33 year old defenseman.

Sometimes you have to pay a guy for what he has done as well as what you think he will do. This seems to be one of those times.
I expect this to look fine for the first few years, then get worse as age hits, but it makes sense - more sense than the contract they handed out to the guy they traded for.
