I would LOVE this to be the case. Like Burns and Byfuglien in recent years, getting that D eligibility for a guy playing wing (assuming he produces) would be gold (for the one year it works).

Matheson stepping in to be the 6th highest paid player on the roster as a #5D is just crazy to me.

Jack Johnson is certainly not good defensively. Matheson is miles ahead of JJ in every aspect of hockey.

However Letang, Dumoulin, Marino, and Pettersson are all easily ahead of Matheson.

I truly cannot stress enough that JJ would struggle to hold down a consistent role as a top 4 defenseman in the AHL.

"easily" is not borne out by the numbers. Petterson, Matheson, and Marino are quite comparable on possession stats. It'll all depend on how they use him and what opportunity he is given. Matheson's ice time under the recently fired coach Q steadily decreased over his time there. I don't think it's as cut and dried as all that. New location, new coach - definitely worth a shot for the Pens.

Well Marino is a RHD, so ultimately it comes down to Matheson or Pettersson. Either way, you're paying your #5D at least $4M which is not great.

I haven’t looked - I wonder how many teams go that deep in the D at $4 mil/per. It’s also a big problem to be paying a middling AHL level player $3.25 mil and keeping him up in the NHL...

seems like a nice trade for both teams . FLA certainly lacks the element that hornqvist can add .

matheson almost took nelsons head off with a stick swing than thankfully just misssed then was benched for the rest of the series which kinda puzzled me .

I like Matheson myself. I am not an analytics kinda guy, but most games he passes the eye test quite nicely. I think he will be a great addition to Pittsburgh and I think Hornqvist will be a great addition to Florida. Florida was in serious need of some heart and grit.
