179 in his second season in 81 games but he has been dropping down ever since...i dont think he is 60 points guy or anything but i do think he is better offensive talent than the chance he was given in Florida...he has been 3rd best option at best in all his years there...

When Latang gets hurt he will probably run that PP...we will wait and see what he can do with it..

PIT would be a good landing spot for Matheson.
    I'll say that much.
A deep-dive on Penguin Matheson >> deep dive on Panther Matheson.

(Matheson's cap & term are pretty similar to another one of my favourite players [sarcasm]... Shayne Gostisbehere.
Just like the Flyers... if the Cats run better with other people on the PP1 and PP2... then what's the point of keeping this style of offensive-D man on the roster!?!
    Trading them = sensible.)

Hornqvist works well for FLA because he's off the books in the magical summer of 2023.
He'll spend ages 33-34-35-36 in FLA.
Honestly - the trade doesn't make a whole lotta sense for FLA... except for the cap space in 2023.
(Y'all know what I'm talking bout by now! )

This is honestly a really effin wacky trade that... makes a whole lot of sense (in my bizzarro world).

So Pittsburgh ends up taking on cap space, and Florida still only has 6 forwards under contract for next season. This makes sense for Florida, do not understand it from Pittsburgh's pov.

Pit needs D...so they added D and Matheson needed change of scenery, nobody knows if it works out but if it does he will be a bargain at his price tag imo

Sceviour will be a cheaper replacement for Marleau or Sheary and they only committed for one year...

only way this does not work for Pit is if Matheson is as bad or worst as he has been in Florida.

Do they? They had 4 top 4 D, 4LHD, and 7 total D prior this trade.

News to me that Pit needed D.

Is Matheson an upgrade on Jack Johnson? Sure just about every single defenceman in the league is. Is he an upgrade on Dumoulin? Certainly not. Is he an upgrade on Pettersson? I mean maybe, but we certainly don't have any evidence to suggest that. At best, who theoretically maybe could be but he isn't right now. And he's obviously not better than Letang and Marino and plays a different side anyways. Is he $1.5M better than Johnson? We don't really have any evidence of that, but also it doesn't make sense to pay your 5D the $3.25M Johnson is making, let alone $4.875M,

To me this only makes sense if they move Murray along with Johnson. I’m assuming this happens. Prove me wrong GMJR.

Rutherford can't move JJ considering how much he's stuck up for him over the past few years, can he? I know GMs backtrack and flip flop all the time but it sure seems like he is all in on Jack.

Getting Sceviour makes this an ok deal for the Penguins as they net one extra player for $775K. That gives them a bit of cap help. However, with 5 left defenseman, they need one to play the other side, and Johnson is really locked in as the #7 D in quality, and that may be charitable.

They now need to deal Riikola, or another D, and there should be a market for Riikola with that cheap contract. Other option is to not match whatever Marino gets, and have Riikola as your 7th D, and bury Johnson, which I highly doubt they'd do.

Marino is under contract, and I believe will also be ineligible for an offer sheet next summer.

No one mentioned that perhaps the Penguins acquired Matheson to play the wing. He played it a few times last season and looked pretty good on a line with Mark Pysyk and Noel Acciari on Feb 11, 2020. I think he would look pretty good on a line with Crosby and anyone!

Pretty sure he'll be good with Crosby. I mean everybody look good playing with Crosby.

i wouldve felt alot better about this deal if matheson had 3 years left on his deal to match hornqvist.

the hornqvist extension was a mistake to begin with as it was at least 2 years too long which has gotten pittsburgh further in this mess by committing 6 years to a guy that 'may' have been underutilized.

these are gambles i dont want my gm to make regardless of the sid geno cup window
