I guess that's one way to clear cap space. Very low price for Bjustad.

    From the Athletic:

The former Minnesota Mr. Hockey and University of Minnesota center was acquired Friday night from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a conditional seventh-round draft pick. It’s believed the condition of the draft pick has to do with how many games he plays next season as Bjugstad tries to revitalize his career right in his backyard.

    ...

He’s entering the final year of a six-year, $24.6 million contract and it’s believed the Penguins are retaining a good portion of his $5.25 million salary and $4.1 million cap hit next season.

I like the move better from the Pittsburgh side. Bjug could rebound, but to do so he would have to push one of their young guys farther down the lineup, and I'm not a fan of that.

They don't have that much at the center position I think

I was so high on Bjug when he was drafted.... he isn't going to live up to that hype but can still be a very useful bottom 6 guy. Nice low risk gamble for the Wild.

With teams around the league tightening their budgets I'm not surprised JR is trying to get ahead of things and shedding some salary. And McCann and Murray are probably out next, so this will be a very fun offseason to watch the Pens.

I think having Bjust on the roster for 4.1 is better than paying 2.05 to have him not on the roster. I don’t even care about the return, I just think this is an un-smart way to allocate cap space.

Good deal for both sides, assuming Bjugstad can stay healthy. Pittsburgh clears some cap and Minny brings in a guy who can replace Koivu at center, or gives good depth at wing.

    Good deal for the Wild.

It's essentially something for nothing, unless Bjugstad plays well enough to cause that condition to kick in.

I realize Pittsburgh needs cap room, but all this is trying to sweep some cap mismanagement under the rug.

I feel the Pens should have received more if they are retaining salary.

Agree with above! A “conditional” 7th round pick AND the Pens keep half his salary? Pretty much gave him away for a used toaster oven. He has more potential than that.

The Bjugstad deal probably means Galchenyuk is not going to be re-signed. I prefer a "hungry" and apparently "healthy" Bjugstad over a Galchenyuk with a new contract.

    I think it's a good trade.

Bjugstad is nothing more than a 3rd/4th liner at this point.
We just haven't seen production from him in last 3+ years.

So yes, the Pens obviously couldn't "give him a way"... and the sweetener to get somebody to take him was to reduce his cap hit to $2.05m (and hold $2.05m themselves).
Of course, the Pens obviously said "Listen - if he plays decently well for you, we deserve something!".
And the Wild says "Yeah, fine, we'll give you a 7th IF he plays 70gp or IF he scores 35pts... that's all though."
PIT: "OK - well, that'll look like we got something."

That's all it is... the conditional 7th is about fan-trickery that PIT got something in return.
They didn't. Not really. Keen fans (us) know that.
They basically found a team to help them shed $2m of cap.
    That's the trade.
$2m of cap shedding for one season of a player barely valued at $2m in cap space.
    That's what each team got.

....which is the long version of “used toaster oven,” as I said before. LOL
