Just got finished on the Laidlaw Pod talking about it. Figured he had a little more time to turn the ship around early next year before being canned a few months in.

I think this is a perfect spot for Gerrard Galant to land.
Here's the fantasy take:

I can't say I'm surprised. The Islanders really made them look silly.

This seems to me to be basically about the Isles series. It's not about regular-season performance, and while they exited in the round of 16 again, they faced the worst opponent possible, given the opponent's play style and knowledge of Caps personnel. He was why they wanted Trotz to leave anyway, right?
It's one of those firings where you better nail the new hire, because the guy you fired seemed at least average.

That makes sense. I tend to evaluate management on how well you did in the regular season, as the playoffs are compressed, and more of a crapshoot, where really hot play, or injuries can wreck you.
There are some good coaches who are available, like Boudreau & Laviolette, so it makes sense to try and get one of them now.

I don't disagree with that assessment, but this is a results oriented business, so if you're not getting results when it matters then I think a change is necessary.
Sounds like they're leaning towards a more experienced voice, and they've already cycled through Boudreau in the Ovie era, so Laviolette might make the most sense. I. think Gallant may see the this is a ship that's started to take on water and will likely stay away and take his pick of the options available.

I hear what you say, but remember that the regular season is also a time when results matter. We often see teams fire a good coach looking for a great coach, and have it backfire. I'm not saying that Rierdon was a good coach, I just think it's pretty clear he wasn't a truly bad coach. 2 division titles in 2 seasons gets him that much respect.

Yeah, I have an issue with teams firing what seem to be good coaches looking for better what I deem quickly. I have a bigger issue with teams firing coaches in first place during the regular season.

Is Reardon really a good coach or just a coach with great players who makes him look better than he is?
I know, you can say that about a lot if coaches in the league but this team won a Cup a couple years ago and most of the key players are still there from that team. Now they are struggling to get past the 1st round.
I guess Trotz knew how to push them harder and that's why he's still in the playoffs and Reardon is looking for work.

I never really got why the Caps didn't pay Trotz. It almost sounded like they decided to fire Trotz for Rierden before the playoffs started the year they won the Cup and couldn't get off that idea.
