Been so impressed with this guy all year but in the playoffs it's unreal. I love Petterson but he's not a game breaker, this guy might just be. Who's better then him right now?

Carlson, Josi, Hedmen? Who else. Do you think Dahlin will surpass him or was Hughes the generational D from that draft?

I think it is too early to say EP is not a game breaker. I think EP is amazing and same with Hughes.

    1. Not every draft has a "generational" D.

    2. Overall D, I think Hedman, AP, Josi, and maybe a couple others could be considered ahead of him, but he's right there in the convo

I kind of meant the generational D, tongue and cheek because Dahlin was the one that was promised but is it Hughes instead? Defiantly not every draft has a generational D.

It's interesting to see if Hughes can continue to outplay AP in this series. Just like last series vs Minny I thought he was the best D and they have a great blue line has well.

I would say he is close to the top 5.

But there is a group of them that are close to that top 5...Makar and Theodore as well as Hughes.

Provorov and Jones could be in the convo too. There's quite a few to choose from.

In fantasy he's easily top 5. But overall the best of the best are deployed in all game situations. Hughes isn't used on the PK at all, which is when all of the other team's best offensive weapons are on the ice. It's an important part of the game. He'll probably be there soon but he's not there yet. I don't give credit for incomplete work.

Hughes is definitely very good but I’m not sure he’s even in the top 10 of NHL dmen at this point.

Top five... hmmm, no - no, no, no.
    Not yet.
Not if we are talking general overall defenseman game.

It's a generic question to start with, so let's create apples to apples.

You, your buddy, NHL GMs, NHL scouts, whoever... are told the following:
"You have to roster the best team possible for a 5-on-5 squad. All the other teams have the exact same 3F & 1D... you don't get to know who those players are, just that they represent general TOP-LINE FORWARDS and VERY SOLID D."
Tell me your choices of D, in order, that you want to fill out that 5.

For me, I'm still taking a lot of guys in front of Quinn Hughes.
Going down the regular season standings:
    BOS: McAvoy
    STL: AP
    TB: Hedman
    COL: Makar
    WAS: Carlson
    PHI: Provorov
    PIT: Letang
    VGK: -
    EDM: -
    DAL: Heiskanen
CAR: Hamilton... maybe Slavin (he's a GOOD player)
    TOR: Reilly
    CBJ: S.Jones
    WPG: -
    NYI: -
    NYR: Trouba
    CGY: Giordano
    VAN:
    NAS: Josi
MIN: - (maybe Spurgeon, he's more solid than he gets credit for)
    ARI: OEL
CHI: Keith (he's a dinosaur, but he still plays well with talent)
    MON: Weber
BUF: - (*I do like Dahlin's upside still, but Quinn is better overall D as of right now, IMO)
    ANA: -
    LA: Doughty
    SJ: Karlsson, Burns
    OTT: Chabot
    DET: -

Right now, Hughes is looking really, really good in the playoffs, especially on PP.
But that might be getting extrapolated a bit too much.

[*btw, no points for the person that decides to nitpick a singular player choice rather than the general concept... which is that there are still a lot of good overall defensemen in the league... some on bad teams and therefore maybe not getting the "shine" of their true skill level.]

McAvoy, Trouba, Keith and Burns I disagree with. The rest have an argument

Edler was +13 on the Canucks this year.
Hughes was -10 on the Canucks this year.
That means they played in front of the same goalie, behind the same forwards.

And I'd guess (?) that Hughes didn't have the higher QoC to face.

I might prefer Edler over Hughes, if I know I have to ice a team against top competition.
If we are talking about "best defensemen", then we also have to consider them against top competition... the one's that will score goals against our guys.

Great List. I think you could fill in a couple more teams:

    NYI - Pulock
    VEG - Theodore

Top 5? He's not even in the top 20 at this stage of his career. That's not saying he won't get there but he's definitely not there yet.

He is rising rapidly but I still think there's 10 or 15 dmen better than him. But in fantasy yes if can avoid the sophomore slump (doesn't this restart almost feel like his sophomore season kinda?) then very soon we will be talking about him in that light.

Fair points. I was busy but I'll put a list together now.

And before starting, Hughes and Edler had very similar QoC, but Hughes had much better ratios (albeit with more oz starts).

    Anyways:
AP, Hedman, Provorov, Letang, Josi, Heiskanen, Slavin, Jones
Maybe Carlson, Makar, Ellis, Hamilton, Karlsson, Chabot, Dahlin, Rielly, Weber, Doughty, Theodore

Hughes is in the conversation, but there are a ton of good options with very little in between them.
