Goaltending cats make up two of our six point categories, so goaltending is very important. I was offered the 3rd overall pick in the upcoming draft, which is junior players only. I have the 9th overall, but not sure Askarov will still be there. I won't trade up for that, but...it beg the question...how early is too early for Askarov?

I think 9th is right around where I would consider grabbing him. Maybe 8th at the earliest.

assuming its 2020 only, i say 8th is earliest but i think 10th is the spot i would grab him in

i would have those top 7 forwards on most people's list plus Drysdale and Quinn ahead of him...

Your signature doesn't say if there are any special keeper rules for prospects. It's hard to rank him without knowing this, given the long time needed for goalies to be relevant.

He's definitely in that 8-10 range for me at best. I rarely draft goalies that early, even ones as highly touted as Askarov. They just take too long to develop and there's always a goalie available somewhere.

Personally, I wouldnt consider drafting a goalie in the top 12. They just take too long to develop. Only way I would reconsider is if I thought I could flip him for something and the GMs tended to overpay for young goalies.

Goaltenders can remain on your development roster for 5 years before having to be moved to your active roster. All prospects, while in your Devo roster remain at their draft salary, based on draft position.

I would draft him as high as 8 but 13 would be the best spot

Given this it's about wait time using up the development slot, as opposed to salary or anything like that. Is there a rule as to when prospects have to be moved up due to games played, or is it always 5 years for golaies? How long for skaters?

4 years for skaters, and 5 for goaltenders, or 20 total games in your active roster.

I personally think this draft has 12 high end fantasy players, and he is #12 on my list.

I would not pick him in the top 20. There's no point wasting a high pick on a guy that won't help your team for at least 3 years. There's too high of a chance that your league no longer exists by then.

With that said, he went at #6 in my keeper league.

I got Shesterkin off waivers and made a previous deal for Sorokin, who was grabbed off waivers before I was able to draft him. Point is, two potential elite goalies available for free. If he's there at 9, grab him. If not, look at previously drafted tenders who are close and available on the waiver if possible.
Points only keeper. 12 Teams. No pos requirements. 18 skaters / 3 goalies (2 count for points.) G/A = 1 point each (includes goalies) Goalies = 1.5 for W / 4.5 for SO. Minors - 4 year protection. Prospects added during their draft year only. Undrafted = waivers.

It depends on league makeup for sure and how goalies are valued. In my 14t dynasty, young goalies are worth their weight in gold prior to ever playing an NHL game because everyone wants that next Vasilevskiy. Plus we are a cap league, so that possible elite goaltender on an ELC is the unicorn of the league.

The league has been around 12yrs and the last, say, 7 GMs ha e been drafting/signing young goalies with that hope for upside. There are no goalies on the waiver wire (except Keith Kinkaid) and all depth charts are basically owned, so drafting/trading is the only way to get that next guy. You can use it to your advantage and get a haul for the goalie by sending him out.

That being said, because of this, I can see Askarov going in the top 6 of my dynasty. My other league however puts far less emphasis on goaltending, and I could see him going maybe 15-20.

So league makeup definitely has some affect on where to take Askarov in your league.
