Round 2 of the WHL draft in 2015 is a great lesson in fantasy hockey history...
If you think you know a good round 2 pick... you know nothing (Jon Snow)...

2 1 25 D Kevin Shattenkirk STL Fort Frances Muskies (Burgundy)
2 2 26 G Tuukka Rask BOS CSKA Moscow (rainydrinkwater)

    P7's Colour-Code Analysis
    GREAT PICKS
SOLID PICKS (have had good value thru now)
PROBABLY, PRETTY BAD PICKS (in retrospect)

    Notes:
*Absolute GEM of a pick on Kucherov, who (in 2015) - had not yet completely popped.
*Yes, Ryan Strome DID finally pop last year. But pretty much everybody that owned him in 2015-2016-2017-2018 had labeled him a *BUST* and he had been traded multiple times for pennies on the dollar.
*After 5 years of "aging"... it's hard for any of these guys to maintain their trade value, but Anderson (as G1 of TOR) and Monahan (as young C1 of CGY) are still fetching good returns
*Although I labeled Johnson as a "bad pick", he was a young player coming off a 70+pt season. Even I had big forecasts for him... but he hasn't done more than 50pts since. Fooled most/ALL of us.
*If Round 2 shows anything, it is that the next tier of Stars (Round 2 Players) can go boom or bust or age to "minimal trade value" in 5 years. Guys like Quick/Dubnyk/Crawford/Lundqvist/Allen were good for 3 years, but have all fizzled out in the last 2 seasons. Not sure any of them could fetch a 2nd round pick at this point.
*Guys like Eberle and Pavelski are now "old" - and probably can be had for 2nd round picks.
*Perry, I think, was traded for maybe a 3rd round (50-70) ish entry pick this year. He's a dinosaur in today's NHL.

In retrospect, Evgeni Malkin wouldn't necessarily have been my choice at #12, but I am excited to see the big centerman back with his original franchise after helping push a few other teams over the hump.

The Spitfires took Lundqvist with our 2nd round pick.
I knew a goalie run would happen in the 2nd... but I also wanted Pavelski - as he AND Giroux (and another in a few rounds) were my top 3 fave players.

praba drafted Pavelski in front of me... which was crushing, absolutely crushing.
You want to LOVE your fantasy team, but Lundqvist was just too solid - as were the Rags - at that point.
So it was a good pick - and for 2.5 seasons, I got good value out of Lundqvist.
(I would flip Lundqvist for... Pavelski... down the road)

Huh, another original still with the Nailers/Rebels franchise. Crawford looks to have been a solid pick in the second round here. Not the best pick, but not the worst either. A fairly statistically consistent five seasons as a workhorse starter were plagued by injuries in the latter half.

Yeah, getting the Blackhawks' starter on the ass end of their Cup contention cycle wasn't necessarily ideal timing, but man he was good until the concussions got him. Are the Blackhawks a playoff team in 2015-16 without him?

I feared the Goalie run in round 2 as well and don't recall why I thought Dubnyk had most potential value of the Goalies left at that time (esp with Bob, Quick, Bishop, Rinne and the King still avail). Hindsight I suppose.

I would add Rask to the "great picks" category - he still provides solid fantasy value in our league - better than Andersen imo

I had my scope set on Kuch for rd 2 from the get go. Did a lot of intel on him and was glad he was there at my pick. Some GM thought I was gonna go with Perry to have the duo but no, it was always Kuch! Perry went next selection. Id move Kuch but come with blank check!

The #Moose continued to have a pretty strong draft even though we were drafting young noobs.

    Rd 5 - Elias Lindholm
    Rd 6 - Jacob Trouba

Dont worry folks... the wheels come off pretty soon.

I ignored the goalie run, or kept telling myself it wasn't real.....it was real.

    P7's Colour-Code Analysis
    GREAT PICKS
SOLID PICKS (have had good value thru now)
PROBABLY, PRETTY BAD PICKS (in retrospect)

*Most people who went young really hit... with a few misses in the later picks of Nyquist and (especially) Turris
*Burns really came into his own right after the pick - making it the pick of the round.
*The John Carlson pick is really showing its value currently.
*Although Buff is now out of the league and Drouin & Galchenyuk have really sputtered, those players did have good "perceived" trade value or actual value (Buff) for at least 4 of 5 seasons.
*I don't think any of us expected Okposo to bust as hard as he did... not a good round to pick a "Kyle", LOL.

Huh, Ondrej Palat is still kicking around for the Nailers/Rebels franchise. If I hadn't traded Benn we would still have all three of our original first round picks. Palat still holding fairly steady since the pick. Not to many highs or lows.

4 18 90 LW Rick Nash NYR Markham Waxers (praba)
    4 19 91 C David Backes STL Windsor Spitfires (Pengwin7)
4 20 92 C Derek Stepan NYR Highland Scotch Hounds (seadawg)
4 21 93 LW Chris Kreider NYR Braham Pietasters (glorybe23)
    4 22 94 D Oliver Ekman-Larsson ARI Edmonton Road Runners (Lemmy)
4 23 95 RW Patric Hornqvist PIT Amsterdam Red Lights (rataylor22)
4 24 96 G Andrei Vasilevskiy TB Manitoba Moose (GinFizz)

*Round 4 is probably the round that owns the most variation of the draft. There were some absolute GEM youth picks in Huberdeau, Hedman, Josi, Klingberg.
*There were some mammoth busts, especially Yakupov, but also Sam Bennett. Nice parlay there by the Nats who moved him for a big return when the demand was high.
*Vas was an absolutely stellar pick by the Moose - who knocked it out of the park in the first 4 rounds: McDavid, Monahan, Landeskog, Vas! Moose did have to wait on Bishop's final year, but as expected Vas was handed the reigns as TB popped.
*The biggest veteran miss was probably Backes, who had one solid final contract year with STL... but then really sputtered in his 3+ years once he signed with Boston. He ended up being a straight-drop by the Spits, with no value retained. Ugh.

Original pick Klingberg was also just traded as well. Didn't realize how much I was changing not just the roster, but the whole organizational foundation!
