Finding value among unowned prospects in rounds 4 (pick 73-on) and 5 (pick 97-on) of a draft is H-A-R-D.
But sometimes people find that value.
    Here was rounds 4 & 5 from season 2:

    4 1 73 D Ziyat Paigin EDM Braham Pietasters (glorybe23)
4 2 74 G Anton Forsberg CBJ North London Nationals (VintageVibe)

5 21 117 D Brandon Davidson EDM Edmonton Road Runners (Lemmy)
    5 22 118 C Ryan Fitzgerald BOS Fall River's Finest (MCMackerel)
5 23 119 G Garret Sparks TOR Montreal Canadiens (newfcollins)
    5 24 120 G MacKenzie Blackwood NJ Windsor Spitfires (Pengwin7)

As can be seen... a long-patient wait on goalies can often be rewarded.
But... also, often that patience doesn't exist 4 years ago - and players like Blackwood were added/dropped by multiple teams until finding value THIS year.
Other gems are to wait & pray on "will they ever come" Russian prospects.
But, that too can be rewarded for those.that.wait.

Default Re: WHL (World Hockey League) - The 5-Year Rewind [Summer COVID Thread]

One of the quirks of the WHL that keeps activity high is the "partial keeper" format.
In the first five seasons, teams had a 35 player roster... and are permitted to keep 25.
The must trim their squad from 35, every June30, to 25
10 players must be re-added, most via drafts: the Junior Draft (rd 1-5) in mid-July, then the PRO Re-Draft (rd 6-10) in mid-September.

Rounds 1-5 are for prospects... the junior draft IS the main draft.
    But...
Rounds 6-10 are for re-stocking a team's PRO squad, with players dropped because they weren't "top 25" level players.
However... there are, occassionally, players coming back from Europe/Russia that don't meet the junior criteria, and these can (rarely) be very valueable #1 or #2 overall picks in Round6 - where the PROs can be selected.

Here was the league's first PRO-redraft, with the opening round being "Round 6", back in September of 2016.

6 1 121 RW Alexander Radulov MON Braham Pietasters (glorybe23)
6 2 122 RW Josh Bailey NYI The Storm (havanablast21)
6 3 123 G Thomas Greiss NYI Toledo Walleye (Goldendelicious)

6 5 125 LW Clarke MacArthur OTT Montreal Canadiens (newfcollins)
    6 6 126 RW Radim Vrbata ARI District-5 Ducks (evans334)
    6 7 127 G Michael Hutchinson WPG District-5 Ducks (evans334)

*Part of what has made the Braham Pietasters our league's top team is his ability to identify valuable assets... in advance of other teams. With the Manitoba Moose being a full "youth" team, Braham succesfully obtained the Moose 6th round pick in Season1... giving him the top PRO re-draft pick. Radulov was incredible value there for all of seasons 2/3/4/5 for Braham. He has finally aged to point of being sold for a 3rd round pick... but this was huge value towards the Pies dynasty.

*Nice picks in both Josh Bailey (a player the top-finishing Spits dropped) and Thomas Greiss (who continued to emerge over the years). Both players became keepers going forward. Bailey especially... who was a 9th overall pick in 2008. He spent EIGHT seasons with NYI, never scoring more than 41pts... and put up ONLY 32pts in 81gp in 2015-16. But he popped off in his 9th season, as a 27 year old (magic age!) and put up 56pts, followed by 71, 56, and 43in68gp last year.

*Little else was found of value, except Michael Hutchinson had good value for WPG in the year where Hellebuyck stumbled a bit. (Hutchinson would actually rake a 1st round pick later in the year).

*Lars Eller, once a 13th overall pick in 2007, has been one of those players that has found solid value as a 35-40pt player in each of the last 3 seasons. A nice pick by the Red Lights as he had just switched from being underused on MON, to eventually carving out a C3 role (and C2 with injuries) on the soon to be champion, Washington Capitals.

Eller & Bailey... two examples that some first round picks can still develop/pop very late (7+ seasons) into their careers.

Somehow I end up with Bailey and Radulov from the Piemaster for draft picks - this year. Hoping to get 2 decent seasons out of these guys. Cleared up his cap issue problems - he will probably end up with a stud with the second rounder in a couple years.
That's why he is called the Piemaster

This is actually great to look at. Shows how little value there is to be found in those re-draft rounds. Will be really interesting to look at a few years side by side and see if anyone has a particularly keen eye for these players.

    *Not much here, truly.
*Alex Chiasson has had spot here & there value as some grit with top players
*The Chris Stewart pick is flagged only because he was the earliest 2015 inaugural draft pick where everybody groaned and said "What are you doing?"... sure enough, he was dropped and not even top 25 keeper value.
*Oskar Lindblom showing up again... people knew about him, but he was on & off free agency over the league's first 2.5 years.

    Notes on Add/Drops:
*What... Anthony Cirelli... beauty find by the Ducks - we'll have to keep track of how that value panned out in following years!
*Also nice claim by the Cougars late on Devon Toews
*Binnington & Wedgewood continued to get a few looks into S2... as they did in S1. (Griffins having a hard time quitting Mr.Wedgewood!)
*Miles Wood and Jonathan Dahlen both got traded for decent returns
    *MOST Add/Dropped player... 12 moves, 6 adds, 6 drops on Mr.Adam Clendening
*Jokerit had some good prospect knowlege, being the first WHL team to be hip to Ondrej Kase
*The league, unfortunately, had a pretty bad "force drop" rule on players that qualified as "PRO" but were also "not in NHL". This forced Nichu into FAs... a rule corrected prior to s3.

Default Re: WHL (World Hockey League) - The 5-Year Rewind [Summer COVID Thread]

    Trades from Season 2:

Might as well do the "elephant in the room" first.
In five seasons, the trade that most shook the WHL was a heavily vetoed trade between a very good s1 team, Falls River's Finest (MCMackerel), that was stumbling in season 2, after a top 3 regular season finish in s1.
It was a very veteran-heavy team that was showing obvious signs of trending down.
The other team was a very youthful team showing potential to compete if it could flip some youth for vets:
"The Storm" - managed by havanablast21, one of the WHL's most active trade inquirers.

    To THE STORM:
    Shea Weber MON
    Evgeni Malkin PIT

    To FALLS RIVERS FINEST:
    Kasperi Kapanen TOR
    Alex DeBrincat CHI
    Tony DeAngelo ARI
2017 Draft Pick, Round 1 (The Storm (havanablast21))

Overall - this was a really good talking point for the league.
Sort of like the first intense-argument in any serious-relationship!!!
The league DID make it through.
Between 1/4 and 1/2 of the league were seriously considering a VETO... especially for those in competition for playoff spots.
Ultimately, the trade was permitted to stand.
Re-evaluating, 3.5 seasons later... it shook out OK.
Malkin has been a superstar, but also a March-April health liability during WHL playoffs.
Weber has plummeted and re-rose in value back to very solid star.
IF... IF... the FRF had held those assets... DeBrincat (who was torching the OHL), Kapanen, and DeAngelo (esp last season!), along with a 1st rounder (20th overall netted Jake Oettinger).

The most critical thing the league learned was that GMs could have done a better job or limiting critical displeasure to the Finest's side of the trade.
There was so much negative public opinion that the Finest GM departed in the upcoming summer.
(A tough spot is there was some speculation on whether the trade drove the Finest GM out... or whether he made the trade because he was already resolved on departing the league. Nobody will know).

But... we got through it... and I think it strengthened our league to make it out on the other side.

    In retrospect... the winner:
P7 Winner: The Storm, 6/10. I'm giving hb21 the win... as his return was better for at least the next 2.5 seasons. But those players still weren't enough to push The Storm to any serious playoff success. And now... IDK. DeBrincat and DeAngelo have been DeBombs lately. Good young players!

    The other trades of significance:

Jonathan Drouin TB The Storm (havanablast21) Lake Valley Thunder (First Round Pick) 0 Wed Jul 13, 2016, 10:13PM
P7 Winner: The Storm, 10/10. The Storm have long been the HOMER-FAN of the NHL-Leafs... and gaining Marner for a disappointment in Drouin was a huge win for the trade-hot Storm.

Getting homer-TOR-Matthews AND Pastrnak (probably still on discount) was a huge haul for the Storm. Eichel did become a great asset, until he got paid... but Vesey & Yakupov, yuck.

    It's BOY-MEETS-GIRL, BOY-LOSES-GIRL, BOY-GETS-GIRL-BACK... the fantasy hockey version.
When all is said & done... was there a winner between Moose/Storm/Generals... in the Pastrnak-hot-potato?

Tyler Ennis BUF Manitoba Moose (GinFizz) District-5 Ducks (evans334) 0 Sun Mar 5, 2017, 3:00AM
P7 Winner: Moose, 10/10. Ooof for the Ducks. One man's FA claim (Cirelli, see posts above) is another man's gold. Quack, quack.

    Drake Caggiula EDM District-5 Ducks (evans334) Windsor Spitfires (Pengwin7) 0 Sun Mar 5, 2017, 3:00AM

    Marian Hossa CHI Windsor Spitfires (Pengwin7) District-5 Ducks (evans334) 0 Sun Mar 5, 2017, 3:00AM
P7 Winner: ME, 6/10. I, the Spits, was a very stagnant trader in s2. But I did move out Hossa knowing his contract suggested retirement. Instead, it was the LTIR skin-disease. Hossa would not play another NHL game after season ended.
So at least I got somethin! LOL.
