Since he's ineligible for the playoffs this year, does his contract start next year, or does it start right away and burn off a year?

I believe it burns off a year. I remember seeing chatter about this. Maybe there was a deadline that passed already they had to sign by to burn a year?

    My quick research determined this:

The language of the adjusted CBA doesn’t allow for unsigned reserved list prospects to play in the 2020 Postseason, but they could sign them and burn the first year of their ELC. That would mean the first of his two-year deal would be burned and after the 2021-2022 season, he would need a new contract.

Essentially Minnesota loses a year of entry level contract and an RFA year i believe. Romanov for Montreal and Sorokin are in the same boat.

The question the teams have to ask is "Do we sign them and burn a year of ELC, or chance them re-signing a new contract in the KHL or another league and not signing the ELC and hence coming over to North America?"

So the Wild pretty much signed him for 1 year??

But they control his rights for 3-4 years after that??

His deal is essentially a 1yr deal. He's an RFA after the 2020-21 season. He is (as of right now) not eligible to be offer sheeted.

It burns a year off his deal, but because of his age, had he signed in the KHL for this coming season and then come over after the 2021 season, he'd have only been able to sign for one year anyway, so this is the best approach for Minnesota. Finally get him over.
