Default Gusev or Kyrou...short and long term...

With the difference in age, and opportunity, with Gusev in his prime, this may seem like a stupid question, but with Lindy Ruff being named new HC in New Jersey, I am questioning his fantasy value now...I have a trade proposal and need to choose which guy I want coming back...Dilemma?

This seems to largely depend on whether you're rebuilding or contending in the near future.

I am looking to retool on the fly...so I don't know that I will have enough to contend this coming season, but would like to think I can the following year.

How quickly do you think Kyrou starts to make an impact? Obviously he needs more time, and opportunity, maybe some special teams as well, but with a flat cap for the next 2-3 seasons, and quite possibly longer, teams will need their prospects to step in and contribute in order to make the cap work.

Tarasenko is set as the first line RW. I think Perron was playing RW on the 2nd line. He's got two more years on his contract and he has a modified no trade clause wherein there are only 5 teams to which he can be traded. Based on that, there's no top six RW spot for Kyrou until 2022-2023. And that might make sense, as it gives Kyrou two years to play on the third line and get used to the NHL. And that's presuming that Robert Thomas gets put somewhere else. If Thomas stays at RW, then something has to change to make room. I wouldn't expect Kyrou to get PP1 time anytime soon. Tarasenko, Schwartz, Schenn, and O'Reilly will probably be in front him, as well as Thomas.

This is a long way to say that Gusev, at least for the next couple years, seems to have a clear edge on Kyrou. Between them, I'd go with Gusev and hope that his 2nd half last year is predictive. In which case, you can turn Gusev into something better than Kyrou next summer.

Too much traffic around Kyrou. Gusev gives you top 6 minutes and PP time now.

Gusev for the next couple years and that's all that matters anyways. Neither will be on your team three years from now.

Another vote for Gusev. I wouldnt worry about Ruff coming in as a hinderance to his offense.

Gusev should be worth more than Kyrou right now. This means that you should take Gusev over Kyrou. Do I think that is going to change in 2 years time? Yes I do but you should be able to move Gusev for more than a prospect who likely won't be in his NHL team's playoff opening night lineup.
