Personally, I think it’s going to matter a lot to him, exactly how Arizona fares vs. Nashville in the play-in. Wins? He re-signs. Close and plays well? Probably. Rolls over, loses 1-3 with painful/pitiful last 3rd period? He’ll see what he saw in NJ. No “life,” and gone. Rick Tocchet is absolutely part of the solution here, and strongest piece of what may keep Taylor Hall.

12-team, H2H. Keep 12, but drop 2 of top four skaters, and also 2 of next six, then five more (from end-of-year rankings). One GK max.

For the first time in his career, he'll get to choose his destiny. During his NHL career, he's played a total of five playoff games; FIVE!

I expect he wants to go to a contender of some sort and won't surprise me if he looks for a team like that. Somewhere he can make the playoffs and have a chance to contribute to a winner.

My guess is UFA and $10 million (although predicting salary is difficult with all the uncertainty right now)

I also see it as a success & money situation. It's hard to weight what's more important, but the simple answer is that both are likely important.

If Arizona makes the conference finals or better, I think he'll consider that enough success to get to the money part.
If the lose in the first round, the money needs to make up for it.

Staying in Arizona all depends on how their play in for the playoffs go and then making playoffs. If they can make it and even at least do well in the 1st round; he may just stay.

I have 4 other teams in mind that maybe he signs with.
Colorado ( he could ride with Mack or Kadri)

Montreal ( because Bergevin will give him all the money he wants and more)

NYI (be interesting to see him play with Barzal)

Edmonton ( it would be hilarious if he did come back to them and McDavid finally gets a legit top winger again to play with)

I think it's pretty likely he tests the market. I wouldn't rule out AZ but I also would think they wouldn't be a favourite. He will probably try to go somewhere with a good core with time on their side - I'm thinking somewhere like Colorado. No idea how much he will make, a player of his calibre should at least get 8m+ per year, probably more. Who knows though with the cap likely being stagnant, the big dollars (9.5, 10.5m per) may not be there. He's already made a lot of money so I think he will be trying to zone in on a winner more than the average big name UFA. I only see him going back to AZ if they offer the best deal and no established contender offers anything in the same ballpark. Certainly, AZ does have some incentive to overpay him to stay considering the effort they've made to bring him in and keep him.

    C - McDavid, Crosby, Tavares
    LW - DeBrincat
    RW - Meier, Miller

    G - Jarry
