Too much extreme thinking here. It's like he's either a star or a plug. It's possible for him to be nothing more than a 6/7D and still be a really nice addition to the team.

Every player coming from the KHL is Panarin or Plotnikov.
No extreme thinking on my part. I'm hopeful he could be a 20-30 point guy at that price on Toronto. Considering the one cap league I'm in goes 900 deep, that'll play nicely.

If he's good he makes the team out of camp. If he's not, he's got a completely buriable contract where he can stay on the Marlies, or he'll jump back to the KHL. Lehtonen also said in the 2018-19 season, he played on the right side. To note, the possible schedule issues with COVID, there could be condensed schedule so more options is great.
So ya, no negative here. Nice no risk signing.

Looks like Lehtonen thankfully won't have to wait for December to play. The Leafs will loan him back to Jokerit to play, presumably, until the NHL is ready to start the 2020/21 season.

The @MapleLeafs have agreed to loan defenseman Mikko Lehtonen to #Jokerit. Lehtonen was the #KHL’s top defenseman last season and will join the team next week.

(No I don't have a hockey problem...)
I thought players with KHL contracts cannot leave the KHL until the end of the KHL season. Am I wrong or will that not apply for Lehtonen next season?
That makes sense. Thank you for the clarification.
Bump. Now that the free agency dust has settled, where do we see Lehtonen slotting in with the additions of Brodie and Bogosian? For the record, CapFriendly has this for the Leafs D depth chart:
Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Dermott-Bogosian
A couple things. I don't see how some people still view Holl an a regular NHL D-man. To me, he is an AHL call-up when injury strikes. I also don't see Bogosian playing regularly for the full season, I assume he'll be slotted in an out. I'd personally like to see Lehtonen placed in Holl's spot but I guess that will come down to camp etc. Something I do like is the added depth should give Sandin another full year of AHL development (if there is an AHL season).
