All the chatter I've seen from hockey reporters today is about how Byfuglien just doesn't want to play anymore. If he's not hungry after essentially a year off, then I'd guess he's not coming back, or if he did, he wouldn't put the effort needed to be what he was.

If you walk away from $14mill ($8mill+$6mill) I don't see you wanting to play anymore. There never seemed to be any issue between player and team before this so I don't think it's that.
Walking away from $6mill in 2020-21...Means he likely needs to be paid at LEAST that to come back.
Chalk up another American who lost their job since March 1st.

The Jets declared him fit to play. He was suspended this year without pay.

You'd have to ask him why he would walk away from the remaining $14M on his contract. Clearly money wasn't the issue,
