I have a very healthy appreciation for firearms and have spent a decent amount of time on ranges, especially with handguns, learning from some of the best the Canadian Armed Forces has to offer. The issues aren't with guns, it's with dumb/dangerous people. I think Canada has it right when it comes to laws for owning handguns. I would love to own multiple weapons, but the rules here in Canada make it especially cumbersome. By comparison, it's the wild west down in the United States. The number of gun related deaths (no matter how you slice it) for the USA compared to other "civilized" nations is staggering.

That said, I completely understand why people own/want them. There is only a thin thread of civilization holding things together at the best of times and a gun can be the difference between you and your family keeping your possessions and/or life when things start to break down.

IMO, low clip hunting rifles and handguns required to be stored at a shooting range are the only guns that should be allowed.
