I've never heard of this and the article didn't really explain - what is "exceptional player status"? Does he get to play earlier than the typical age limit or something?

Yes that's exactly it. Only a handful of players have gotten it in the CHL and never before in the WHL. He is a year below what is required to play in the league, but Hockey Canada reviews exceptional player status applications every year. McDavid, Tavares and Ekblad are examples in the OHL.

Basically they feel his development would benefit more playing in a higher league.

This is exciting news for the WHL... hopefully he can come in and make an impact...If he dooesn't then the WHL will never consider it again.

And i am excited that he will likely go to the Pats and that he will be making regular trips to Brandon to play the Wheaties.

Not a good player. 26 points in 14 games as a 15 yo. I can do that in my sleep.

What, you wanted me to say something obvious and cliche? hehe

I heard there is potential that we could have another Crosby vs Ovechkin type option.

There is Bedard, but there is also a Russian Kid that is lighting it up at the U18 - Matvei Michkov

He's got a bit of Pavel Datsyuk and Nikita Kucherov in him," a Russian scout said. "He's got hands like the Magic Man and the offensive instincts of Kuch. Michkov is as close to a sure thing as it gets among Russian prospects.

Imagine we'll have Matthews (26/27), McDavid (27), Eichel (27), MacKinnon (29), Draisaitl (29), Aho (27), Marner (27) when Wright, Bedard, and Michkov are in the league?

The NHL's talent level right now is really insane and there's a ton of already top end guys who aren't even in their prime yet.
