    Default European/KHL Free Agents

After nabbing Mikheyev & Kubalik in various leagues this year (missing in others) I think we're all looking for 'the next one'

So far info has been hard to come by on who's coming over or not and potential upside.

I didn't see a thread on this but figured with KHL playoffs upon us. It's time to start the list

Who you got & what is the expected upside?

I'll just quickly toss out a few names I posted elsewhere a bit ago. Barabanov I'd like to see come over to see what he can do but there isn't a whole lot to be excited about from what I've read. Some guys could always surprise though. In a deep cap league where I'm tight against the cap next season I've picked up several of these guys at league minimum and I'm hoping one or two work out.

Artem Zub - Senators 'in the mix' to land KHL D Zub

Malte Strömwall - recently linked to Red Wings

Konstantin Okulov - linked to Montreal and Toronto earlier this year, Oilers name has been thrown in there as well

Alexander Barabanov - Coyotes reportedly interested, Leafs also been mentioned by Friedman, and he scored a hat-trick in front of both Bergevin and Guerin not too long ago

Timur Bilyalov - reportedly turned down a contract extension with the intent of coming to NA, Leafs and "at least three more teams that have made serious inquiries about the goalie."

Anton Burdasov could also try to give the NHL another go, he only signed a 1 year KHL deal, hopefully he explores his options earlier this time around if he does.

Jouko-Pouko recently updated Julius Nattinen's (Liiga's leading scorer) profile and I've heard that NLA leading scorer Pius Suter has an out-clause the come to the NHL this summer as well.

I believe some teams have been keeping a close eye on Mikhail Grigorenko too.

His name has been thrown around quite a bit as well as Dmitrij Jaskin's who came in 2nd in KHL scoring behind Kaprizov this past season. Both were ranked as #2 & 4 respectively in Pronman's latest Top free agents from college hockey, major junior and Europe article.

Yea, he and Tryamkin seem likely to try to return as well but the Oilers/Canucks still hold their rights.

I'd be interested in digging deeper on these guys to see which ones are fantasy relevant. For example in my 14-team dynasty league none of the guys here get a look before October at the earliest if they make an immediate splash. In deeper leagues it might be a different story.

Probably not much fantasy relevance outside of deeper cap leagues but hey, hockey news.

24 year old, right shot Dman, Artyom Zub has trimmed his NHL list down to two teams. The Ottawa Senators remain a top choice. Zub is expected to make a decision in the next few weeks.

    Igor Eronko@IgorEronko

Zub doesn't play PP cause his playmaking abilities are not great although he has a good vision. Great PK specialist, good skater, sound defensively. This year he started to pinch in a lot more and showed he has a shot (2nd in the league in goals scored between the Ds with 13)

Also, I just caught this article for the Athletic about Zub from 2 days ago if anyone wants to look more into him. I haven't looked it over myself yet though.

If Toronto isn't the second choice then there are in fact three teams in the mix and the third one is Toronto.

Hearing Alexander Barabanov is set to sign with NHL teams for the next teams. There's a report in Russia he's going to sign with the #leafsforever. Recently he had 3 teams he would like to go to, one of them should be the Coyotes. Chayka talked with Barabanov visiting St Petes

Worth to add that Barabanov's skating is very much worth to watch. He's a top-10 KHL skater if not top-5. And is very good one on one due to that. He's a beast outskating Ds in the corners or along the boards

    Craig Morgan@CraigSMorgan

Per source, I can confirm that the Coyotes have interest in, and are pursuing Barabanov.

    Darren Dreger✔@DarrenDreger

Leafs and at least 20 other teams have reached out over the season. Not guaranteed he’s making the move to the NHL. Barabanov and his agent, Dan Milstein, are going to start interviewing teams early next week. https://twitter.com/sunhornby/stat

Normally I wouldn't direct anyone here to the gong-show that is hfBoards however, the guy who runs the @RUSProspects twitter account posts articles about KHL players potentially coming to North America there and they're worth a read. Thorough, well written, and insightful, they could be quite useful for anyone in deep cap leagues looking for cheap players to fill out next year's roster.

    Toronto Maple Leafs
    @MapleLeafs
The Maple Leafs have signed forward Alexander Barabanov to a one-year entry level contract for the 2020-21 season.

    Details: https://tml.hockey/2xVRSLL #LeafsForever
I doubt he'll be as effective as Mikheyev as far as his all-around game goes but he could be a good (and cheap) 3rd liner/PK who can keep up with (or replace) Kapanen. If no forwards are moved in the offseaspon though I'm not sure he makes the team until injuries open up a spot for him.

Can't help but think the Leafs were close on a deal for one of the rumoured Dmen but couldn't complete the tinkering... conditional pick etc.

it's become an annual thing for the Leafs - signing players from Euro/KHL leagues. They should stick with the KHL though... a lot more success to date

Ottawa remains the frontunner for Zub and, goaltender Alexei Melnichuk has trimmed his list of NHL teams down to four. All US based clubs.
I didn't pay any attention to Melnichuk until speculation started that he may come to America to avoid being stuck in Askarov's shadow in St. Peterberg. He looks solid and depending where he signs he could step right into being a team's best goalie prospect. 21 years old, 6'1", 190lbs. Played in 16 KHL games this past season posting .930SV% and 1.68 GAA with 8-5-1 record. I'm not sure how many of those losses, if any, were when he came in to relieve the starter. If Melnichuk played in any of the handful of SKA games I saw this year I can't say I noticed.
