Let's call it what it is. - A very serious strain of flu.

If we're calling it what it is, then we should explicitly NOT call it a strain of flu because it is not an influenza virus.

Flu offers a solid analogy, in that the signs and symptoms are similar, as is the mode of transmission, but coronaviruses are a different type of virus, which will require their own methods of treatment. For instance, we have vaccines for influenza viruses. The annual flu shot is cocktail or the 3-4 strains of influenza expected to be prevalent in the flu season ahead. There are presently no vaccines or anti-viral medications for coronaviruses as they are much less studied, and we are almost certainly not going to have a vaccine for COVID-19 before this disease peters out.

Some other info worth discussing. All the masks people are wearing are ridiculous. Most masks aren't going to stop the spread of the virus since the virus is small enough to fit through the fabric weave of your standard surgical mask. They were also designed for medical practitioners to wear to prevent them from spreading stuff to all the patients they see, rather than daily use by people. So anyone buying up surgical masks is doing more harm than good, because they are taking masks away from the people who need them in health care professions. I was just at my dentists and they were talking about how their most recent order of masks left them insufficiently supplied. And again, masks aren't going to stop any coronaviruses or flu for that matter, but they will block larger stuff like bacteria from spreading from doctor to patient.

Speaking of masks and people needlessly buying them, what's with the big outbreak of people buying TP in record amounts? Do folks expect to crap more with this virus or what? As fast as Costco was filling the shelves, people were grabbing them just as fast.

I'm not worried about getting sick, I'm worried about panicking idiots and empty shelves. If you have an earthquake kit you should be OK

I'll add a few things I hope will put it into better perspective

We have been dealing with this for months here in East Asia. MONTHS
There was an initial panic followed by a calm as everyone has kept themselves at home for the most part. Many items were sold out for a few weeks such as the aforementioned TP, masks and staples like rice. Those things are back in stock for the most part, although they are being rationed to prevent hoarding.

4 children die every minute from hunger.
Covid-19 is not dangerous compared to that.
We can easily fix world hunger, but we don't for whatever reasons.
Follow procedure. Wash hands, don't touch your face, avoid contact with other humans and when doing so try to stay a meter away from them. If some moron is coughing, admonish them while getting away from them asap.
Its simple really.

It might be a new thing for those of us in North America, but this is old hat for folks in East Asia.

No news about ISIS, or some other fear based media manipulation ?

Haha yep. It is being put front and centre at every store I go to.

The issue is ppl are buying it because they're scared. Then because there's less people don't want to be left without TP for normal use so they buy extra TP now because it's flying off the shelves. It's just a bad cycle.

There's a lot worse things to be scared about than running out of toilet paper.
