72 goals to pass Wayne Gretzky. I think Ovechkin will continue his 40-50 goal pace this upcoming season. I really hope he gets it sooner rather than later. Watching 900 goals would be incredible.
Hopefully Kuznetsov stays with the Capitals or at least get a good replacement if Kuz really wants out. If Kuz leaves then I would lower my projection to 35-40.
Connor Bedard - 1
That was a funny graphic
When I voted on this, I couldn't believe the difference between the yes and no votes with so many more in the no column. There is no doubt in my mind that he will pass Wayne Gretzky's goal scoring record. It will come sometime next season in my opinion.
Hindsight I guess but what Ovi has done from a durability and consistency stand put since this poll was created is unearthly. He's 38 years old and in his 36 year old season he scored 50 and in 37 year old season he scored 42. Your not supposed to be able to continue to do that at his age.
On top of that it's a Gretzky record. His records were supposed to be untouchable. If Connor McDavid scored every other game for his next 1000 games, which would put him over 1500 games played in his career, he would still be over 90 goals away from the record.

I don't know, at the time of the poll Ovi was 34 already and still 200+ goals away. That's a tall order for anyone, and history is replete with guys really slowing down or crashing at that age or not far from it. Just another reason why it's so remarkable that we're now at where we're at and it seems it's really a matter of "when" not "if" anymore.
On the cusp of an incredible feat that I never thought I'd see in my lifetime.

Obviously a phenomenal player and goalscorer, but stats like that tell me a lot.
I get it but goalies were horrible back then, and the discrepancy from the top players to the middle of pack was way larger.
You want to know what's telling, is Ovi is the only hall of famer on any of the rosters he's every played with in the NHL. Backstrom is the next closest but is far from a shoe in. Gretzkey off the top of my head played with a half dozen if you include LA and St.Louis.

Pretty cool article here reshuffling the scoring list based on era-adjusted goals.

I particularly found this graphic to be an eye-opening illustration of the difference between in league-wide scoring during Gretzky's and Ovi's respective careers. It's a phenomenon we're all aware of -- but seeing it like this really struck me

Thanks for sharing this. Three things really stuck out to me. First Howe, what a beast if you included his years in the WHA, he might have another 100+ goals added to his total. 2nd Iginla, such an underrated player and sniper. Seen him in person not to long still in great shape. And 3rd Ovi is the GOAT of the goal by any metric in that article.
