I think Mcdavid can hit the 2000 points
31 TEAMS keep all multi-cat (lot of them) dynasty
Offensive stats : Goals, Assist , PPP, PPTOI, SOG...
Defensive stats : PKTOI, BLKS, TakeAway, Giveaway...

You're not wrong about politics and sports being forever intertwined. That said, when I watch sports (outside of national teams/Olympics) or a movie, I just want to be entertained for a while without being lectured to or be reminded that politics is everywhere and affects everything. That's not burying my head in the sand, it's just wanting a diversion from reality/life to escape for the moment the current state of the world, which in case you haven't watched the news lately, is being burned to the ground by evil people, but that's a subject for a different thread.

Even if McDavid get's 2000 points he still won't be breaking a Gretzky record. Ovi's achievement might be the only pure offensive record anyone ever breaks of Gretzky's.

I'm with you Comish I want the politics out of my sports please. Heck unless the movie or show's plot aligns with it, I want it out of those areas as well. I am tired of everything being so intertwined now.

I'm also in the camp that I'd prefer the goals record to remain with Gretzky.
I firmly believe, barring major injury, this will be Ovi's record though, hopefully surpassing at least 900.
I could see him challenging over 950, but that's not really a milestone. 1000 is though, but that is quite the stretch.
Ovi's body has held up really well... must have something to do with all that sauce he's been crossing.

I still think Gretz is the better goal scorer though - when Ovi breaks his record that likely won't change.

Records are meant to be broken... all records will eventually be broken

Technology, rule changes, anatomical changes, nutrition, etc it's evolution.

While we're over here talking about Ovi doing it, Jagr just did! (Sort of)

"During Sunday's game between Kladno and HC Trinec in the Czech Extraliga, hockey legend Jaromir Jagr scored the 1,099th goal of his professional career, surpassing Wayne Gretzky, who had 1,098.

Gretzky tallied his 1,098 goals between the NHL, WHA (playoffs included for both), as well on the international stage for Canada. As for Jagr, his 1,099 career goals came in the NHL, KHL, Czech leagues, one goal in the German league, as well as internationally for Czechia."

I disagree. The NHL is specifically designed to not have their records broken. This runs counter to how every successful professional league operates.

I think it's almost near impossible for the Gretzky points record to be broken. Like he has more assists than Jagr (2nd place) has points. League rules, Talent, longevity, and luck all have to align perfectly to break Gretzky's point record and the closest we had was Jagr.

McDavid needs to essentially be at his current pace for like 1,300 more games to pass Gretzky (15.85 seasons, or McDavid's 41st yr old season). Records are meant to be broken, but omg stuff has to drastically change for McDavid to sniff it.

Not one for the career highlight reel. But simply remarkable this guy. Never thought I'd see someone come all that close to touching Gretzky's goals record.

13 forty goal seasons. Guys put one or two of those on their resumes and are coveted. 13. Thirteen. Thir-teen. Nuts.

I looked up the best seasons ranked by goals scored by age. Here is how Alex Ovechkin has ranked vs the entire league throughout his career. Ovechkin could pass Wayne Gretzky's 894 in 2024-25 NHL season. As of today, he is only 73 goals away from the all time goal scoring record - NHL. The Gr8 Chase willl definitely be an exciting one to watch! Really hope he gets it. #900 soon afterwards would be a very special moment also.

Cool stats -- thanks for posting!

A couple things that smacked me in the face.

Some of those first few seasons: 52 goals as a 20 year old and 65 goals as a 22 year old ... and ranks 5th and 4th all time?! Man, a few guys with some mighty prolific seasons before/at the tender age of 22!

Current NHL record of 44 goals for a 40 year old ... that's impressive. Haven't looked it up yet, but who is that ... Howe? Jagr? Can't think of many guys who were still trucking at 40.
